If Facebook and Instagram were to join the Fediverse and you could follow users from that world from your instance, would you do it?

Boosts appreciated. I'd like to know the current consensus of the Fediverse.

@rolle I have little to no interest in their local/federated feed. But yes I would follow anyone interesting and my friends who refused to move.

Basically everything on the fediverse is public anyway. If you want privacy, you should pivot to jabber, signal, revolt, or element.

The important point about the fedi is less the privacy and more the lack of algorithm manipulation, the moderation, the freedom to migrate your account, the web of consent, etc.

There’s still a privacy issue because if you federate w/a privacy abuser, you contribute to the data stockpile (read: profits) of that abuser. It’s not that Meta can see the fedi data (that’s the case anyway), but participating in a network w/the abuser facilitates the /creation/ of data on their assets that would not otherwise occur. Your conversation w/a Meta pawn helps Meta collect more data associated to their pawns. Like feeding an alcoholic’s codependency.

I already have an instagram account. All of my friends have one. I still use it because that's the only way to stay in touch.

Now what's the lesser evil between contributing to meta on instagram where I signed up and accepted their terms and services VS contributing to meta by federating from a place where all my messages are public but copyrighted until proven otherwise.
@matthieu_xyz That question is only simple if you establish your own 1 person instance just for IG. If you want to pollute a more public community fedi instance, then the answer is more complex as many people then inadvertently feed the adversary & become needlessly compromised in many ways.
@matthieu_xyz And luckily we are not limited to those two options anyway b/c there is a 3rd way to stay in touch: your friends join the fedi. It is not you who has the responsibility to join an oppressive network; it is the IG/FB pawns who have the responsibility to join the open free world to stay in touch w/you.
@matthieu_xyz One person can make a big difference here. I recently had to communicate w/a class of students. *All* of them were on #Facebook. I stood my ground. So they all had to step outside of Facebook to reach me.
