Yeah, the rumours are true. #Calckey is changing its name.

A change in brand is never easy, but it’s better to do the change now rather than later.

I’ll tell you this, though. The brand will reflect the growth of the project.

What’s currently known as Calckey isn’t merely a Misskey fork anymore.

@atomicpoet That's great! When I first heard the name I initially thought Calckey was an open social version of Mathematica (which would actually be pretty cool, btw) 🙂

@mike @atomicpoet same here. even now when i search for ios calckey apps i get calculator results.

i'd say the name Mastodon doesn't elicit social media thoughts either but people seem to have accepted it.

So... uhm. I have to ask. I probably shouldn't. But here goes? Why is Calckey named like a scientific calculator for 80s maths classes, and not... I dunno... Squirrel or something? Feels more fun, more like a Squirrel than s #calckey tbh. I was expecting UI etc more like 80s math exercisebook ruled paper background and 80s embossed 3D block text. But instead calckey is this nice smooth friendly chat over decent coffee feel. "Go Nuts. Get on Squirrel!" - or whatever...

@atomicpoet I hope you're able to enlist some talented designers (including Logo Designers) from the #fediverse . It's something that most projects seem to treat as an afterthought, when in fact it can have a huge impact on it's overall perception.

I have a feeling that #mastodon tended to get the spotlight because of it's level of polish and branding, whether people were conciously aware of it or not. It seems legit, and that's what good design does;)

@atomicpoet I think Calckey changing the name is a good thing, as it will also potentially avoid any legal fights with the calculator app on the App Store (as well as Google Play) for future apps.

I trust @kainoa will pick a cool name for the platform.

@atomicpoet Just some wild guesses. Were the "C" and "key" elements to be remained, the re-branded name might appear (if not just mere #Ckey but) as... 🤔

#Calckey 🔜 #Cagekey

PROS:
- implies to freedom & open-sourcing
- better than e.g. 'Cuekey'

"CONS":
- too easy to remember
- connotes implicitly
- audaciously logical

AND
#Cellkey would be equally neat and nimble new name, implying similarly, but also more scaledly.
