I was reminded recently about a talk Dr. Monique Morris gave about Black girls getting pushed out of schools for disciplinary issues. This is very much connected to the issues of having police officers, code named – school resource officers, stationed in schools. Many studies have connected police in schools to the school-to-prison pipeline. Today, I’ll talk about the problems with cops in schools. 1/6

For everyone, parents, teachers and students the issue is about safety. The police argue that having cops in school makes them safer. But, that’s a controversial point. Here’s a link to a collection of studies that attempts to provide a “balanced” look at what the studies actually say. https://www.chalkbeat.org/2020/6/23/21299743/police-schools-research 2/6
What research tells us about police in schools

Existing studies offer evidence that the presence of school police increases suspensions and arrests, particularly for relatively young students.

The Brookings Institute put out an interesting proposal outlining the problem with school resource officers and proposing some solutions which covered short term changes, medium term changes and goals for the long term….which by the way lead to getting police out of schools.

A better path forward for criminal justice: Reconsidering police in schools

School police officers have been popular in an era of mass shootings in schools, but have also been linked to negative outcomes for students. In this chapter of “A Better Path Forward for Criminal Justice,” experts offer ways to reimagine public safety in schools.

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackFediverse #BlackTwitter #PoliceInSchoolsBlack advocates have been trying to get cops out of schools for years, but much of the advocacy came to a head after the death of George Floyd. Calls to defund the police included taking the MILLIONS of dollars used to pay school resource officers and using that money to hire support personnel for the children. Look at the stats in this ACLU report https://www.aclu-wa.org/story/school-resource-officers-when-cure-worse-disease 4/6
School Resource Officers: When the Cure is Worse than the Disease

SROs, also known as Campus Resource Officers (CROs) are commissioned law enforcement officers with sworn authority to make arrests, deployed under the auspices of a need for community-oriented policing in K-12 school districts.

Even given what we know about police targeting Black, Latino and disabled school children, you may not know just how bad it is for Black girls attending schools that have cops. Here’s a link to Monique Morris’ TED Talk on the issue. It’s only 12 minutes long. Hope you will watch it at some point today.

Tomorrow I’ll mention some of the real challenges to removing cops from schools and how the police use fear to push communities to reverse their decisions to remove the police. 6/6
@fulanigirl Yes! And until there stops being a literal crime called truancy - criminalization of youth's free movement and self-education outside the walls - schools will always already be carceral.

@fulanigirl I'm glad cops ain't in schools in Germany unless called in...

In fact my last school's principal balled uniformed personnel like police and military from the premises and enforced that rigorously...

@fulanigirl

Wow what a beautiful dream, practical, healing. Monique Morris is such a wise voice in a time when stupidity and praise of cruelty blares loudly in our ears.

I wish I were younger, I wish I could be of active help. All these children are such unique individuals and everyone is beautiful. We owe it to them to ease the pains by giving them positive things as Ms Morris recommends.
Just Wow! May it be so.

@NoctisEqui You aren't too old to help. What is happening in the school districts where you vote?
@fulanigirl
Thank you for including this Ted talk. What an awesome idea to actually pull girls closer, to give them support, to help them work on what they can, in and for themselves.

@fulanigirl this is an amazing thread, thank you for making it!

It is absolutely true that the school-to-prison pipeline starts with SROs and their authority over students, especially students of color.

The very best thing we can do for students is recognize that SRO presence is not warranted in an overwhelming majority of cases and that the real need is for a greater presence of student counselors to provide mental health support for those in distress.
