3DS Hacks Guide

A complete guide to 3DS custom firmware

Make sure not to update your 3DS if you haven't yet, and follow the guide first. And given that the eShop is offline and there's not really first-party sales of titles you want anymore, why not? At the very least, you can rip all your carts to SD card and play them without needing the carts anymore.
@ceralor small update to this, apparently a workaround has already been found for all the versions besides the us, certain older models apparently don't work with the workaround though and need a flash cart
@ceralor to add to this, it’s always morally correct to hack your console!
@Casuallynoted I'd hack my 3DS with the sole purpose of running Moonlight but I don't wanna be restricted from online play and I don't have another 3DS.
@ceralor Oh you wouldn’t be restricted from online play! Nintendo has no way of telling if you’re on a hacked console when playing online

@ceralor not to mention literally unlocking the built in GBA backwards compatibility of AGB_FIRM (besides the 10 existing games for solely the ambassador 3DS consoles/accounts) is great, it's very similar to using Nintendont on Wii U to be able to play GameCube games with modern amenities like wireless controllers, virtual memory cards, and more. New Super Ultimate Injector can help immensely in that regard.

The only games that won't work correctly are games that require cartridge hardware (WarioWare Twisted, Boktai games). But you get perfect compatibility with everything else, as it is literally running a GBA in there--as the 3DS shares one of the same CPUs as the DS, which shares one of the same CPUs as the GBA!

@DokoroNuki Is this the case with the New 3DS as well?
@ceralor Yes, AGB_FIRM is still in there as well. When you system transfer off of an ambassador 3DS, the games go with it, they're not locked to the original system.
@ceralor On that note, https://switch.hacks.guide is also a website that is morally correct to visit and explore.

Switch CFW Guide.

@ceralor I installed custom FW on my PS Vita and New 3DS XL a few years ago, best decision ever and now I don't have to haul around my collection and worry about losing small carts that can fall into car seat cracks pretty easily on a road trip
@ceralor - The nice thing about working at NOA was all the information I had on homebrew over the years. Made it SUPER easy to hack my Wii, Wii U, DSi and 3DSs. :)
@dolari @ceralor LMAO I've always wondered how much people at Nintendo know about homebrews and what they think of it

@Devourer_ITA @ceralor - We know a lot more than we say, mainly because we don't want to tip off people on how to play our repair system.

When the Wii was still repairable, we knew several ways to check if homebrew was on the system (mostly holding reset on start). If we saw PriiLoader pop up, we knew it had homebrew. But we wouldn't TELL the person on the phone that, because then, they'd know to remove Priiloader before calling to get the system repaired (we refused to repair homebrewed systems and banned the systems). Also - 32004 errors were ALWAYS Homebrew.

As to what we thought of it? Well, that depended on each rep. Personally, I understood WHY Nintendo was so very anti Homebrew...but I knew there were legit reasons to use it. But I worked at NOA, so I had to tow the line when we got those calls

Personally, I don't install Homebrew on my systems until NOA no longer repairs them. I don't want to pirate, I just want a working system. Once NOA stops repairing them, Homebrew allows me to "protect my investment" if my system goes bust.

@ceralor It was way easier than I thought it could be,.

@ceralor be sure to immediately make CIAs out of any software that requires a copy per console to properly play ;o)

(my Switch will rue the day I find a "switch.hacks.guide")

@yakkoj Did you try that URL before replying? :3

@ceralor no (didn't see it in search), but it redirects to the second hit DDG gave me

(yes, I have RCM device; it turned out that I just need to get off my butt and do the work ;o)

@ceralor And in most cases it's legal
@sleepyboi2852 @ceralor did you just do what you want with your own tech?! Preposterous
@ceralor lemme find my flashcart and magnet
@i_lost_my_bagel Oop; updated already?
@ceralor no I just wanna do it that way for fun once I get a new 3ds
My original 3ds has been modded since rxtools was the latest cfw
@ceralor good thing I modded mine back when Soundhax was a thing
@ceralor I did it years agooooo
@Loosf Same! Updated it a couple months ago.
@ceralor Don't worry, I've had my NEW 2DS XL softmodded for a while now. I can certainly help those looking to hack theirs if they need assistance with the guide.
@Corvier_Fairburn I think the guide is pretty straightforward as-is thankfully. The Switch one needs work mostly because the photo examples of what to do for shorting the pin for RCM are ass.
@ceralor Absolutely. Speaking of the Nintendo Switch, if only hacking the Switch Lite was easier than having to find and solder a mod chip which is something not everybody can afford. Even if they could, folks like me don't have the skills to solder a mod chip into the system.
