Let’s create a playlist about supposed love songs that could actually be about something much…darker. I’ll start with this menacing masterpiece: “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James & The Shondells #NotALoveSong https://youtube.com/watch?v=EskyTWjnG2k&feature=share
@tommyyum “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You” has always struck me this way, especially the line “love makes me treat you the way that I do.” Is he cheating or abusive & buys her lavish gifts to keep her in line? Or is he bankrupting himself to shower gifts on a woman who isn’t that into him, in hopes of winning her affection? I’ve wondered for years.
@ovenall A classic example of loansharking.
@tommyyum right? With either of my interpretations, there’s an implied “…now you owe me” after the list of things he bought for her
@ovenall An analogue to the broken world of “Santa Baby,” where all relationships are transactional. 😢
@tommyyum at least Eartha presented herself as a willing participant in the transaction :)
