Let’s create a playlist about supposed love songs that could actually be about something much…darker. I’ll start with this menacing masterpiece: “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James & The Shondells #NotALoveSong https://youtube.com/watch?v=EskyTWjnG2k&feature=share
“Turn Around” by Carl Perkins is definitely #NotALoveSong https://youtu.be/YvHVNYDgFS0

Needless to say, “Baby It’s Cold Outside” is definitively #NotALoveSong

@tommyyum Odd, I was working at Disney in the 80’s during the worst of AIDS, and have been thinking a lot about this song… https://youtu.be/0QDKLglEP5Y. It was safe to dance, but working with so many gay men, no one and nothing felt safe. Ronald Reagan used AIDS to wipe out an entire American culture. #NotALoveSong, and not a dance song either, i think…..

@tommyyum I think the canonical example is “Every Breath You Take” but maybe “There She Goes” by the Las is more in line with what you’re after.

Although these are intentionally not what they sound like.

@tommyyum “I Got You” by Split Enz definitely has something going on under the obvious level.
(This is probably true for a lot of early 80s songs.)

@tommyyum “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You” has always struck me this way, especially the line “love makes me treat you the way that I do.” Is he cheating or abusive & buys her lavish gifts to keep her in line? Or is he bankrupting himself to shower gifts on a woman who isn’t that into him, in hopes of winning her affection? I’ve wondered for years.
@ovenall A classic example of loansharking.
@tommyyum right? With either of my interpretations, there’s an implied “…now you owe me” after the list of things he bought for her
@ovenall An analogue to the broken world of “Santa Baby,” where all relationships are transactional. 😢
@tommyyum at least Eartha presented herself as a willing participant in the transaction :)
