Martin Lewis on #BBCLauraK says we are paying £300 for the standing change of just having gas and electricity.

This does not seem fair.

the rise in standing charges is due to the existence of extra profit-seeking companies since privatisation (the electricity DNO (distribution network operator - eg UKPN, Powergrid, SSEPN) or gas network operator (Cadent, NGN, SGN etc), which have a natural monopoly but have also neglected improving or maintaining infrastructure, requiring expensive last minute fixes/upgrades (in my town Cadent have half the roads up at this time)
