In 2007, Rob Meek came to us at FontShop with a wild idea: let people make fonts on the web using modular building blocks. Folks could quickly get into type design, while experiencing how difficult it is to master, thus gaining an appreciation for the craft. 15 years later, @fontstruct still has an active creator community! Some fonts made in the last 3 months:

Even professional type designers joined in early on, such as @marksimonson who transcribed some graph paper experiments from his college days. https://fontstruct.com/fontstructors/91/marksim

I made a bunch of shoddy, unfinished things (https://fontstruct.com/fontstructors/40/stewf), but WPA Gothic still gets used now and then (https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/7687/wpa-gothic).

The FontStructors who really knew what they were doing built some incredible things. Holly Dennis’s Badger Spine defies the geometry of the tool’s early brick set, but then when you zoom in you see that she cleverly incorporated the classic concept of a halftone grid for the shading. https://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/548518/badger_spine

While EthProductions, who started using FontStruct as a teenager, leaned into the modularity of the medium with a font in which each letter is a maze, and each letter maze connects to the next (https://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/934978/fs_lost). fs lost won the “Inline” competition in 2014 (https://fontstruct.com/news/2014/02/18/inline-competition-results/).

After the first few years of FontShop support, Rob has been running the free site completely independently. He continues to add new brick shapes (https://fontstruct.com/news/2018/10/01/new-bricks-half-arcs/) and technical features (such as support for color fonts (https://fontstruct.com/news/2021/06/17/layers-and-color/), some of which are available exclusively to patrons (https://fontstruct.com/faq/88/fs-patrons/all-about-fs-patrons).

@typographica @fontstruct hmm 🤔
That first example looks like directly inspired by the embroidery font by Daniël Maarleveld without giving any credits.
@fontspectrum @fontstruct I thought of Minot https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/45105/minot, but you’re right that it’s very close to Maarleveld’s font. When was that first shown?
