My latest column: San Franciscans have long assumed the SFMTA prioritizes revenue over safety in its parking tickets — and now there’s data to back that up. Of the agency’s 1.2 million tickets a year, 92% have nothing to do with safety. https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/heatherknight/article/parking-tickets-18106566.php
Why most SF parking tickets don’t go to dangerous drivers

Data shows San Francisco officials prioritize revenue over safety in deciding when to slap drivers with fines for dangerous parking.

@heatherknight I’m glad this analysis got done, and genuinely pretty happy with where the Chronicle is these days. But why do you think this sort of analysis is waiting for one random Internet Guy to do the analysis?

(Similar for his map of car ownership—5th and Mission once talked about how parking tickets were a “universal” SF experience and I wish I’d had that data handy to refute them!)

@luis_in_brief This analysis took Steven Braitsch hundreds of hours over many months. We have a small, yet fierce investigative team at the Chronicle but they can’t cover every possible investigative story. That’s why when Steven offered to share his data with me, I jumped at the chance.
@heatherknight you should absolutely have jumped at it! And glad you did. (And I have supported @braitsch’s work too!) just perhaps a bit sad that it is too much to do in-house :(
