I dip back into Twitter a few times a day. And yes. It's awful. And yes. It's where a lot of my pocket pals hang out. And yes, all the tropes on both sides are true.

But today there was a link to an NZ Civil Defense post about the emergency alert test on 28 May, but linking to their (NZCD) Facebook post - and omg, it's SO MUCH WORSE over there. I've probably not been into FB this year...

What an absolute trash fire of a place.

Related: the @nzcivildefence account on Twitter hasn't mentioned the test (so, by extension, hasn't been tooted here). Although their website does, as does their Facebook feed.

What an absolute clusterf*ck 🙄

@phil_tanner It was interesting to observe on birdsite the reactions to the suspension of a lefty fave (for being abusive and impersonation, from what I understand), and compare it to the reactions when a right fave is suspended. It's completely the same language/defending/excusing/finger pointing/name calling used.

@Happyfishmedia people are people wherever they are on the political spectrum, and they behave in peoplish ways 🤷‍♂️

It's just weird suddenly having your bubble burst & exposed to unmoderated content.

@phil_tanner in the marketplace of ideas there's a surplus supply of arsehats
@phil_tanner that gov can't bring itself to fund civil defence to build actual Web pages that can handle the load from a nation of just five million ppl
@Br3nda @phil_tanner
I'm not sure that is a thing that can be done.
Lotto have money oozing out their collective wazoo, very predictable usage peaks, and they haven't managed it...

@blueshiftnz @Br3nda Last I checked (probably 8 years or so ago, TBF) Lotto also couldn't get their act together to release an Android app to the Play Store, and were making you download and install an unsigned APK from their website tho.

And then my Android alerted me to the fact it was accessing camera in the background when the app wasn't open. Which Lotto denied, even tho I had screenshots of the Android system alert saying just that.

So... Maybe they just don't focus on IT? 🤷‍♂️

@phil_tanner @Br3nda
They at least have an official app in the Play store now. It's just not very stable. And every time there's a large Powerball draw it collapses under half of NZ trying to see if they're rich yet. Even under normal use, it's even less reliable than the Outlook Android app.
@phil_tanner it feels like there's no sense of direction, of leadership in Government and services for digital approach. I guess it's a big ship, and still very early days for GCDO. Still, for someone in IT this particular issue seems like a pretty low bar to get over.
