I shit you not, I just drove past a local firing range with a sign outside advertising “kids’ firearm birthday parties”. Complete with primary colors and balloons.

What a fucking dystopia

@ambercadabra Jesus. I can't even. 🤦‍♀️
@donmelton @ambercadabra to be fair, and this is only slightly fair, but ranges are extremely structured environments to teach people to respect and properly handle guns, so I'd rather it happen there than in the back 40.
@kwf @donmelton @ambercadabra i was raised with guns and taught proper gun safety, also a liberal and I still think we need tougher gun laws and less instant access to guns
@kwf @donmelton @ambercadabra for sure, is someone's going to learn to handle a gun, a properly run gun range is the place for it. It's just when I'm thinking of extremely structured environments to teach people to respect and properly handle guns, a child's birthday party doesn't make my list.

@dragonfrog @kwf @donmelton @ambercadabra

Right.
Also, "extremely structured" is only how they SHOULD be. It's often not the reality and even without a kid's birthday party going on, many of the people who frequent them are not the most reliable individuals.

@ambercadabra that is nuts! From our European perspective, it's crazy 🤦‍♂️

@ambercadabra

Jonesboro Arkansas has one that does that. It's a family shooting park owned by the city. They had a mass school shooting in 1998. Westside Middle School. The shooters were two little boys.

@ambercadabra Oh, I don't know. Kids are easier to toss in the air...
Sick jokes aside, I think the easiest way to dissuade children from liking something, is to force it upon them. It seems to work for all of the children I know and especially the ones my wife and I foisted upon an unsuspecting world.
Mine were of the subset that stated flatly: "You can force me to eat cookies but I won't like them!" Yep, my progeny. Spoiled and self-centered. But I still love them.
@ambercadabra I want the Johnny Human Torch birthday party for my 6 year old. Flame throwers chasing kids wrapped in gauze drenched in Ronson Lighter Fluid…. Same shit
@ambercadabra

Remember this accidental shooting of a supervised 9-year-old at a range in Arizona? She was shown how to fire the range's lawfully registered pre-1986 fully automatic Uzi, then when she fired on her own the recoil kicked the barrel upwards as expected. The instructor died of a single shot to the head.

The range, known as Bullets and Burgers and situated near the border with Nevada handy for Las Vegas. Since then they have raised the minimum requirement for shooting to 12 years old and 5ft in height. They still offer guests the chance of firing an Uzi.

@ambercadabra
Invite their friends. And enemies. Why not?
@ambercadabra Not to detract from the off-the-planet message here, but top profanity.

@ambercadabra the most disturbing thing about this, to me, is how much I prefer that idea to teaching your kids and their friends to shoot on a camping trip, because you know that's happening.

I learned to shoot as a kid at summer camp by an NRA certified instructor. It makes me shiver to think I was an NRA member before I was old enough to understand what that meant, but at least I didn't lose any fingers or friends.

@ambercadabra Pacifism vs. Survivalism. I choose the former, ymmv.
@ambercadabra At the same time, we must ban, "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret", from school libraries. For the kids.
@ambercadabra Sugared-up kids with guns. What could possibly go wrong?
@ambercadabra while i would not have a birthday party for my child there. They would be the best place to teach a child, gun safety. Considering their trainers, probably have hours of training and range time.

@ambercadabra Reminds me of my last straw to gtfo the South for good: Driving along the highway and seeing a billboard advertising a

Y2K SURVIVAL AWARENESS AND GUN SHOW

at the convention center. 😨 🏃

@ambercadabra Do they hang a piñata down range and shoot it until the candy pours out?
@ambercadabra Yesterday in Florida I drove past an old store on a major road in town that was a music store until recently…they sold various instruments and held lessons there…it’s now a gun shop and not a subtle one…major signage touting guns for sale.
@ambercadabra Florida recently passed a law removing the requirement for a gun permit.
