The privatization of #hospital cafeterias in #Calgary and #Edmonton has led to empty shelves, higher prices & a dramatic degradation in the quality of the food available to PATIENTS, staff & visitors.

Much of what is available is unhealthy. There used to be shelves with yogurt and cottage cheese and fresh vegetables and fruit ... And they're all gone.

@gemelliz 20 years ago BCLib Premier Gordon Campbell privatised many BC hospital services like food and housekeeping, laying off some 4000 workers who had the option of applying to the new US contractors to work at half the wage/no benefits they had been receiving before to do the same work. This has only been only redressed in the last 4 years.

You know what would be revolutionary? Outsource to a small Cooperative Capitalism company (where all employees share in the profits) instead of a large industrialized kitchen type corporation. The smaller group will focus on their customers because they all benefit - the community they serve and the workers themselves. Sure there would be some challenges but the end result is worth the effort.
The answer isn't always bigger.
