Would you consider becoming a department chair if the compensation was a stipend of $5500 above your base salary and a 50% release from instructional workload?

Nobody in my department (~40 faculty/staff and ~10 tenured faculty) will consider applying for the role and the admin sees no reason to even consider increasing the compensation.

@drb I wouldn't even think about it for that compensation. Feels like another example of an academic institution relying on folks making personal sacrifices instead of properly supporting & compensating them.

Exactly. If I'm taking on that much extra stress and anxiety, I'm at least going to be paid for it!

I could see that, but in this case you'd still be teaching 2 courses per semester while being chair.
