I’m sick and tired of hearing this lie peddled by the GOP and corporate media. Raising the debt ceiling does not increase spending or the federal debt. It simply allows the government to pay bills it has already taken on— and defaulting on the debt would be catastrophic.

"We in the GOP are inveterate liars & we are getting pretty good at some whoppers like the debt ceiling."

@rbreich math is hard for republikans.
@rbreich who has Biden's ear to tell him to simply say the debt ceiling increase is to pay off Trump's tax cut. No increase, taxes reinstated.
@rbreich why doesn’t the government just cancel the debt?
@rbreich but that would be the truth. The GOP base wants "red meat 🍖" lies and falsehoods. You know. Like there is only weather and climate change does not exist. Even if it did, it would be all natural and in no way caused by human behavior.
@rbreich
It would awsome to see the US default.
It would give us an even better reason to starting stringing up the Republican SBs in congress and the Senate.
I’ll bet that there are a lot of people surviving on SS, who would be PISSED if they stopped receiving their monthly checks. And I’ll bet they own a lot of GUNS.
@rbreich I'm annoyed that every Democrat and serious journalist isn't in front of a camera asking why the Republican debt urgency *always arrives when a Democrat is in the White House. Holding the country's credit hostage and demanding austerity is *always reserved for Democrat presidents.
@rbreich Thanks for being rational. Unfortunately, half of America is not rational and does not give two hoots about economics or public policy. All they want is bread and circuses. A new Edward Gibbons will record this history. The downfall is virtually inevitable at this point.
@rbreich who’d work for a Government that regularly hasn’t the money to pay them
@rbreich trump in 2019 "I can't imagine anyone ever thinking of using the debt ceiling as a negotiating wedge."
trump in 2023, "“I say to the Republicans out there — congressmen, senators — if they don’t give you massive cuts, you’re going to have to do a default,” said Trump, But it’s better than what we’re doing right now because we’re spending money like drunken sailors.”
Showing that not only is a he a liar, he doesn't understand what the debt ceiling is.
@rbreich Dems/Biden need a lesson on branding. They should be calling this the MAGA default crisis from day 1.
@rbreich Bills like the GQP's $2 billion tax giveaway to the rich.
