As I finish planning on a workshop about the end of DH projects, including end-of-project management, digital preservation options, assessing success, & ways to move forward with next projects (including course-integrated digital projects and/or collaborations), I'd love to hear any advice that you think I should share with the group. @kfitz @elotroalex @benwbrum @sharonmleon @[email protected] @[email protected] @kalanicraig @miriamkp @foundhistory @Readywriting
@jmcclurken @kfitz @benwbrum @sharonmleon @jaheppler @rebeccawingo @kalanicraig @miriamkp @foundhistory @Readywriting what tack are you taking? DH projects can mean all the things. I'm of the persuasion that most internet-facing DH projects should be done in 3 years or less, should have a static output and that all of this should be on an MOU. For success, at least your campus newspaper should cover it if its public humanities, or that the relevant fields are citing it if academic humanities.
@elotroalex @kfitz @benwbrum @sharonmleon @[email protected] @[email protected] @kalanicraig @miriamkp @foundhistory @Readywriting Depends on if institutional projects or class-based projects, are they on-going or intended to end (because of funding/interest/support). I like static version, but not all have local expertise. Sensitive to varied capacities.
@jmcclurken @kfitz @benwbrum @sharonmleon @jaheppler @rebeccawingo @kalanicraig @miriamkp @foundhistory @Readywriting yeah, static is worth it for non-student projects that hope for longevity. I prefer to do ephemeral with students anyway, unless it's their project and they want longevity. Then I have that talk with them about the long term, and why it's worth it to develop that "local" expertise.
@elotroalex @jmcclurken @kfitz @benwbrum @sharonmleon @[email protected] @[email protected] @kalanicraig @miriamkp @foundhistory For students, I want them to focus on the how instead of the what. Take screenshots/video, reflect on the learning, put THAT in a portfolio. That's the part they should preserve.
@Readywriting @elotroalex @kfitz @benwbrum @sharonmleon @[email protected] @[email protected] @kalanicraig @miriamkp @foundhistory The student focus is so important, but I imagine some in the workshop will be viewing this from an institutional perspective. I'm curious if others have additional advice for libraries or edtech units.
@elotroalex @sharonmleon @jmcclurken @Readywriting @miriamkp @kfitz @rebeccawingo @jaheppler @foundhistory @benwbrum Static sites 4eva! (More seriously: Underlying text/data/images + video walkthrough of what team intended, all of which can be migrated forward, help connect institutional & public-facing preservation.
