$125,972 raised for the funeral of Jordan Neely, the black man who was murdered by Daniel Penny.

$2,067,641 raised for the legal defense of Daniel Penny, the white man who murdered Jordan Neely.

America in a nutshell.

@Strandjunker Both depressing and terrifying :(
@Strandjunker This one is not R vs L split. This issue has split the left. Just read the comments in the (liberal readership) of the NYT. They are overwhelmingly pro Penny or at most agnostic.
@Orange_light @Strandjunker the NYT is no longer liberal, in case you hadn't noticed. If it indeed ever was.
@Orange_light @Strandjunker I'm sorry, in what world is the NYT Liberal? (Except possibly in the Australian sense where the Liberals are the conservative right wing party)
@Strandjunker murdered? He’s charged with manslaughter. And even that’s not proven yet. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.
@deeplyaware @Strandjunker are there other suspects I’m unaware of?
@deeplyaware @Strandjunker Well, either he intended to kill him, or he was an extremely incompetent soldier.
@ariaflame @Strandjunker when you behave like that to people in public, harassing them, they never know if you won’t pull a knife to stab them. So you take a certain amount of risk. And when a struggle ensues, you can’t be expecting a perfect response from someone that felt threatened. I’ll wait for all details at the trial, but from what’s known now, I’m not in a rush to blame the former soldier because his attacker died.
@deeplyaware @Strandjunker Unconscious people can't stab people.
@ariaflame @Strandjunker and that’s why I’m waiting for some details: was this person limp for like 10 min while he was still choked? Did he fight up until the end? Etc. I don’t think we know enough yet.
@deeplyaware @Strandjunker If you are limp and still being choked you're dead a lot earlier than 10 minutes.
@Strandjunker You don't have to have a gun to be a vigilante. You can support extralegal executions with a checkbook.

@Strandjunker Hold anything for 15 minutes. It's a long time.

If Penny had wanted to subdue Neely, he could have let go after 3 minutes, which is already a dangerously long time to deprive someone of oxygen.

But he held on, for 12 more minutes.

Penny is a murderer.

@Gustodon @Strandjunker
And weren't there 2 other guys holding him down? Why did he think he needed to continue to choke him after he went limp?
@ordrad It's my understanding that one guy was helping him hold Neely down while another pled for Penny to let go, but didn't escalate to a physical confrontation to make it happen, which might be asking too much.
@Gustodon @Strandjunker Watch the video of MMA fighter Nick Diaz subdue and then release rendering “alleged” antagonizer unconscious. A very short period of time. Penny willfully and intentionally murdered Neely. There was no other outcome for cutting oxygen for that long.
@Strandjunker
Have you considered not living there?
I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just curious.

@ScribblersEmporium @Strandjunker I don't know if you've ever made an international move, but it is exorbitantly expensive. I have done it three times as an adult. Daily, I want to leave this country. But I can't afford another international move, and I am an only child with elderly parents who are my responsibility.

That's just one woman's personal anecdotes. For the other innumerable Americans who also want to get out, there are further innumerable reasons why they can't.

@Strandjunker Too bad Neely had zero dollars to get food and drink that night, so he wouldn't have been so hungry and thirsty on the subway. That fact indicts us all. But hey, tax cuts for oligarch billionaires are far more important than human lives, right?

@Strandjunker @DemocracyMattersALot such a great example of systemic racism

Even if a small % of white ppl support the murderer, white ppl are ~70% of the population and have 10x the per capita wealth of Black ppl

10% of white people being horrible could engulf the entirety of Black community, & dwarf them in $$ resources— this is why the GOP wants to maintain the current status quo of wealth inequality. They’ll hurt poor white ppl to stop wealth from accumulating in Black/Latino communities

@Strandjunker

Penny did what most white supremacist "dream" to do.

@Strandjunker I felt a sadness in the pit my stomach reading those figures.
@Strandjunker @Techronic9876 if Penny is an honorable person he’ll give the money to Neely’s family
@Strandjunker Another RW hero like Kyle Rittenhouse. The GQP sure loves their killers.

@Strandjunker While it does feel bad, consider that a funeral is a finite expense. Once the costs are met, there’s not much reason to keep pouring in money. A legal battle that has just begun is a much bigger expense, with an unknown cap. Should Neely’s kin decide to pursue a wrongful death suit (🤞) the needed costs would be higher and likely to garner a much higher donation amount.

I hope anyway. Though white supremacy continues to beat down my attempts at optimism.

@Strandjunker (Just want to make certain it’s clear that I believe Penny committed murder and should be held accountable for that, and that white supremacy is absolutely to blame in so many ways. Not condoning that at all. Just think this is about the only thing I’ve read about the case that could actually have a reason not attributable to that cause.)

@Strandjunker Kid Rock was one of the murderer's biggest donors.

It's white supremacy. I feel pretty sure if Daniel Penny had been a black man, RWers would have written this off as "black-on-black crime" and moved on.

@Strandjunker If Neely had murdered Penny, I'm sure he could have raised $2 million himself. As it is, $125K guarantees Neely won't be buried a pauper...
