I have signed @ARC_Tracker's petition to raise the PhD stipend -

It's not financially sensible to become a PhD student, especially in Australia. The one PhD student I had from my DECRA quit, he couldn't make ends meet and uni finance didn't let me raise his stipend. Then I quit too.

Well, that's just shit.

Here in Germany it's a little better, but I have had some questioning me about why I'm offering "full positions" to my students, and also that students going on a research visit abroad "can be expected to sublet their flat". The academic culture is shocking everywhere.
