Since other social media have decided to censor #TurkeyElections today I hope this can be a moment for the #Fediverse to step up.

I'll be following and boosting the election hashtags, including #Turkey, #Turkiye, #TurkishElections and #Seçim2023.

I hope you will as well - and be extra welcoming to any from Turkey who have just started posting for today's election.

The coming weeks will also likely see repression as #Erdogan tries to steal the election.

Also if you know anyone in Turkey who is politically active, try to get them onto Signal and then we can share any updates they send encrypted to us.

I agree 100% with @Loukas:

"Since other social media have decided to censor #TurkeyElections today I hope this can be a moment for the #Fediverse to step up.

👉I'll be following + boosting the election hashtags, including #Turkey, #Turkiye, #TurkishElections and  #Seçim2023. 👈

I hope you will as well...be extra welcoming 2 any from Turkey who have just started posting 4 today's election.

The coming weeks will also likely see repression as #Erdogan tries 2 steal the election."

@HistoPol @Loukas my wife and in-laws have voted, fingers crossed for change!
@Loukas I've been wondering why there's nothing on the election itself, only the days before... virtually anywhere. I opened fedi actually just to seek out this topic. So sad, thanks for boosting this topic!
@ljrk yes it's a sad state of news media and social media that they don't convey how huge this election is for the future of Europe.

@Loukas

I suggest to follow @b9AcE for excellent news coverage in the region.

For the elections dictator Erdoğan's interview propaganda was broadcast on 2̲4̲ TV channels at the same time. https://www.turkishminute.com/2023/05/13/kilicdaroglu-criticizes-erdogan-interview-pledges-media-diversity-ahead-of-turkish-elections/ Main State-propaganda channel TRT gave Erdoğan 32 hours of coverage, while opposition electoral alliance candidate Kılıçdaroğlu just 32 minutes in one month. https://www.duvarenglish.com/state-run-network-trt-gives-erdogan-32-hours-of-coverage-kilicdaroglu-mere-32-minutes-in-one-month-news-62327 Google recommended pro-government media outlets in Turkey 81% of the time. "Every day, around two million people search for the Turkish words "haberler (news)" and "son dakika (breaking news)" on Google and see the content suggested by the algorithm. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the only politician who was suggested more than 5,000 times." https://www.duvarenglish.com/google-excessively-recommends-pro-government-media-outlets-in-turkey-report-news-62399 The birdsite too decided to gag opposition ahead of the elections. https://medyanews.net/twitters-censorship-in-turkey-raises-concerns-ahead-of-critical-election/ Meanwhile, "Erdogan accuses Turkish opposition of working with Biden". https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/final-day-campaign-erdogan-accuses-turkish-opposition-working-with-biden-2023-05-13/

@earthworm Yep. I stick to the traditional spelling "Turkey" in English even though Erdoğan demands it to now be spelled "Türkyie" in English too, as I think it just plain a bad idea to e.g. have it spelled with a character that most people worldwide don't even have on their keyboards. Such a renaming is also extremely abnormal and if the principle would be followed by others would just make a horrible mess, causing people to not know Zhongguo, Sverige, Hellas, etc means anymore.

@Loukas This satire music video still sadly remains relevant 🇹🇷

@Loukas I hadn't considered that in these kind of cases the fediverse has an in-built advantage because it can circumvent domain-level blocks – the same information is accessible via thousands of different instances. Not impossible to block but far more difficult.

That's part of the main reason "we" invented and/or support the decentralized setup of the #fediVerse in the first place!

@Loukas Despite occasional political dimensions, #Eurovison is still pre-eminently and mostly entertainment and it's sad if seemingly contradict decisions about winning occurs.

It's also sad that many people seem to care about their own egos & exposure on Tweetland more than e.g. democracy and responsible free speech.

...since a concept of an "absolute free speech" is only possible for autocrats within their realm of power.

Only a #democracy can provide a real #FreeSpeech

@Loukas Please post when you get news... yesterday the election was everywhere and today it was like nothing had even happened 👀

(Sure... the gov works quick but not that quick lol 😉 )

@Loukas Is the election censorship being reported on anywhere?
