Today is the 87th birthday of Margaret Calvert. You might not know her, but you'll be very familiar with her work, and you've probably seen a picture of her today without even realising it.

In the 1960s, Margaret Calvert designed the pictographic road signs which are now a ubiquitous part of life in the UK. She based the girl on the Children Crossing sign on old photograph of herself.

@ravensrod 🤣. Apparently she hates how much people make fun of that particular sign, and regrets not drawing the spade outside of the pile of Earth (so it would be clearer what it represents).

Think everyone understands the sign, it just lightens the mood a little when stuck in traffic waiting to get past.
