“News” as entertainment is killing democracy.
@politidope
The inevitable result of news for profit.

@politidope

Nothing is news anymore. It's all infotainment from a corporatist media-infotainment complex.

@lednabm @politidope
I've long thought that the best tool to fight disinformation is a "truth in labeling" approach.

1) legal definition of what is "news" (vs "opinion", entertainment, etc)
2) civil and criminal cases for fraud against those claiming "news" that isn't

@TCatInReality @lednabm @politidope
In an ideal world we wouldn't have to try and force labelling on facts verses editorial opinions. But the powerful people who buy news organizations very much want us to confuse their opinions for facts, so here we are, in the less than ideal world.

And coddling those lies in more ego boosting nuggets of misinformation for the poorly informed is just how they have gotten better at propaganda for profit.

@Urban_Hermit @lednabm @politidope
100% right!!!!

"News" was always partisan. But decades of oligarchy, profits and technology have taken it to new, society-destroying levels. Just like corporatism has destroyed the planet, income inequality, etc in other spaces.

Breaking up the media oligarchies, truth in labeling and some product safety limits on the tech would have massive benefits.

@politidope I barely *watch* news shows for that reason. On occasion MSNBC, but mostly it’s #NPR, the Inky (Philadelphia Inquirer), NJ Spotlight, and various podcasts and newsletters I subscribe to.
@politidope "News" as entertainment is killing objective fact.

@politidope

Read the classic “Amusing Ourselves to Death” then ask yourself why you watch ANY television “news” at all

@politidope amusing ourselves to death
@politidope your mom is killing democracy
@politidope “angertainment” is a useful concept too
@politidope you reckon when Murdoch’s ex-wife of 15 years dated Putin--it was discussed??
@politidope
Actually, being fed entertainment and trying to pass it off as news is the issue.

@politidope News for profit is worse. Unbalanced non commercial news on all networks will solve much of our current issues.

Take back the brand news from 24 hour networks and have news on every channel regularly. Voila no need of breaking news coverage, and they need magazine programs that in depth analyze situations around the country.

@politidope
That concept traces back to "Hard Copy" doesn't it? The show died, but it's style infected cable news in general.

@politidope Nah it's the reverse: our news media has been giving the customers what we actually want which is different from what we say we want.

Sadly what most Americans want nowadays is childish reinforcement: to be told that what we already think, is the truth. We all _say_ that we want to hear the facts wherever they lead but by our actions we don't mean it.

It's dueling tantrums all the way down now and the media just mirrors that back to us.

@politidope

Billionaire ownership of news during the billionaire coup is producing a lot of look over there! and isnt this cute! stories
