i was playing it by the ear - i'm fluent in english but i never learned it formally, so i took every single pause in a sentence as a comma
That was actually the problem with this paper; none of the authors is a native English speaker. I don't fault them for the errors. I do, however, fault the copyeditor of the journal. It's rare for a paper to defeat me, but this one did!
