It is important to comment because AC Transit Staff are considering replacing the current "Multimodal Design Guidelines" with "Transit Supportive Design Guidelines"

Their claim is Complete Streets with Pedestrian Bulb-outs and Protected Bike Lanes are slowing down the bus :(

We are glad AC Transit is refreshing the Multimodal Design Guidelines to support paratransit and other transit operations, but it is also crucial to improve traffic safety at the same time

After all every bus rider is a pedestrian and our safety walking to and from the bus is paramount

International bus lanes were designed for speed without considering pedestrian safety creating the deadliest road in Oakland

Gwendolyn Carson, Emelia Martinez, and Lolo Soakai all lost their lives due to road design that encouraged dangerous speeding

NACTO has guidelines on how to build successful transit streets that support transit reliability and pedestrian safety

We ask AC Transit to look into this guidelines to Minimize Person Delay and Maximize Safety as they refresh their Multimodal Design this year

Thanks to all who joined/called in!

Also 🙏 AC Transit Board for requesting a clear demonstration from staff re: causal relationship b/t route issues & adopted complete streets policies.

We encourage the adoption of metrics other than speed when evaluating route performance. 🚌
