STOP using SOCIAL MEDIA for News, RSS is MUCH BETTER!

PeerTube

@thelinuxexperiment
Yeah, RSS is pretty amazing. Didn't know about the online services like kill the newsletter. Will definitely try it out.

I don't like RSS for videos though since I typically have to have a separate video player for that, or in some cases have to deal with a wonky video player.

@thelinuxexperiment
Me noticing about this video from my RSS reader :))
That's really way better.
I also don't miss anything.
Social media has made us less patient honestly. Good content (Blog articles, videos, ...) get lost between all those short or spam content.
@thelinuxexperiment stop watching 15 minute informational videos and read the same thing in 3 minutes.
@thelinuxexperiment
My dream is a RSS generator that can generate RSS feeds from private Facebook groups and friends' profiles (using my login credentials ofc). Haven't found any service offering that unfortunately :(
@thelinuxexperiment I've been using Feedly as my RSS reader of choice. Really nice and customizable UI across platforms and a great free tier!

@thelinuxexperiment
Another excellent take and video πŸ‘ πŸ‘

I've been using RSS feeds for nearly 15 years, never looked back. RSS feeds keep you informed, free of noise and sane of mind ;-). Time to use some of your tips and upgrade my RSS state of mind πŸ™

@thelinuxexperiment I only wish there was some RSS app that would not look like email inbox. Even News Flash is way too information packed. I would prefer the list to be bigger with more spaces and stuff... I have an eye strain issue and anything that is packed with lots and lots of letters close to each other is really hurtful to my eyes...
@thelinuxexperiment
two comments:
1. many Fediverse platforms have a built-in RSS feed for profiles, no need for a third-party app!
2. for MacOS/iOS users, the app I recommend is #NetNewsWire. It's free, it's FOSS, and it's fantastic.
I'm happy to see that your videos on PeerTube are so successful. Thanks for the great contenet!
@thelinuxexperiment Do you think that Friendica can be used as an RSS reader? I mean, you can follow RSS feeds here (they look as regular accounts), you can add them to a "group" so you can only see posts from certain accounts, and you can even create folders that you can save the content to.
@petrescatraian @thelinuxexperiment Yeah i think Friendica has a lot of cool features i only moved away from it because i didn't like the look and lack of mobile apps.
It's so terrible that the browsers removed the RSS icon to subscribe to feeds in your feed reader. It was very practical to be able to have the RSS icon in the same place for each website because it would be part of the browser UI and not only the website UI. Then you could add a hook where to redirect to subscribe. Sadly both the hook functionality and the RSS icon have been removed from all browsers.
Oh hm, thanks for pointing out that RSS is available on PeerTube and that it shows all the videos unlike the ActivityPub Subscription implemented in PeerTube https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/issues/3947
@thelinuxexperiment this reminded me to setup Nextcloud News thanks

@thelinuxexperiment RSS is one of the things that stopped evolving because of modern social media.

I hope that it remains functional like you show in the video.

I am not sure why, but RSS doesn't work if channel on peertube instance is federated.
