Was wondering the other day why Alaska is part of the US and not Canada, because Alaska is literally right next to Canada.

Think it had more to do with geopolitics and not oil as the Alaska Purchase happened about 20 years before oil was used to make car fuel. See https://history.state.gov/milestones/1866-1898/alaska-purchase
