Breath fairly taken away by this note at the end of Washington Post article illustrating with 3D models the destruction caused by an AR-15โ€™s bullets.

Itโ€™s not just theoretical. With autopsy reports and family consent, they use those 3D models to show us how Dylan Pozner (6) and Peter Wang (15) were killed. Thoughts and prayers can fuck themselves.

If youโ€™re up to it, I think itโ€™s useful knowledge, and hereโ€™s a gift link: https://wapo.st/3B5O47K

What does an AR-15 do to a human body? A visual examination of the deadly damage.

The Washington Post examined autopsy and postmortem reports from nearly a hundred victims of past mass shootings that involved an AR-15 style rifle.

The Washington Post
@Holberg Thank you. I couldn't get past Peter Wang. The six yo Batman boy broke my heart.
@Frankc1450 I get that -- I was in tears by the end.
@Holberg it's horrific. I've been pushing for gun control my entire adult life. I'm in my seventies now. WTF is it gonna take?

@Holberg thank you for the gift link.

This article is incredibly well done. Makes it crystal clear the kind of destruction an AR-15 can do.

I have never bought the excuse that anyone "needs" these guns. They are like truck balls, a toy that lets you show everyone how badass you think you are.

OR you are interested in slaughtering people in unimaginable ways.

Imagine someone you love dying in this way then tell me how much more you value that gun.

#GunViolence

@Holberg Frankly I think any legislative body that considers arming teachers blah blah blah should, as a group be required to look at this article and be shown the images of Sandy Hook and other shootings involving AR-15 style weapons. As in, forced to see what they do. puke bags gladly provided. No one leaves the room. #gunregulation
@mbfrezon You've hit on a really good point, I think -- that a side effect of never showing photos of the carnage allows what happens to remain abstract in minds that prefer abstraction when that knowledge should be indelibly concrete.
@Holberg I'm pretty sure the guys who wrote the #SecondAmendment had no idea what an #AR15 would be able to do to a human body.
@BruceMirken And they also took pains to specify in the Second Amendment that the right to bear arms was for the specific purpose of a well-regulated militia. That's what really gets me -- if you compare to the First Amendment, where there's no qualification for the right to free speech, it seems clear they didn't even think of it as a free-for-all for musket ownership.
@Holberg True. The late Warren Burger -- Nixon-appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court -- was quite explicit and pointed about how nonsensical it was to think the 2nd Amendment guaranteed an unlimited individual right to guns. While I'm not a conservative, I do miss the existence of sane conservatives.
@BruceMirken I know what you mean in the sense there will always be conservatives and you'd just like them to be reasonable people. A constant refrain of mine over the last few decades has been missing Rockefeller Republicans.

@Holberg @BruceMirken

the whole gun debate is so impossibly mired in old, stale arguments that everyone's heard a thousand times, and already has equally old, stale counterarguments

it's too easy to pick apart the bad-faith and self-contradictory right-wing arguments so let's focus on the good-faith liberal arguments

yes, you're right, of course the framers were thinking about the militia, but this whole argument is just as hogwash as the current court pretending to read the minds of dead white men from the 1700s as the only valid guide to whether everyone can carry weapons in times square

and on the left we think right-wingers just need a little education and they'll think like we do, just show them photos of ripped up bodies, and they'll understand

but they're not unaware, many have fought in actual shooting and bombing wars, they know better than we do the horrific effects of these weapons

in their minds they're the good guys, the ones who are hard-headed enough to withstand brutal consequences in service to lofty abstractions like freedom and tradition and nation and purity and god

repeating the old, stale arguments and counteraguments gets us nowhere

instead of wishful thinking about eliminating all the weapons, we need to understand our adversaries and act accordingly

@ares @Holberg For the record, I've never thought NRA types just need a little education. Gun culture in the U.S. is a cult.
@Holberg @stevesilberman Donโ€™t get too wrapped up in โ€œAR-15.โ€ Any high-velocity round of a similar weight will do the same damage.

@Holberg Thank you for the gift link. Really well done, by the WaPo team.

It's such an horrendous dereliction of duty for (mainly Republican) politicians to let this go on and on and on...

@Mtn_Fox Tremendously well done -- and that makes it that much harder to read.
@Holberg
I'm not sure if "thank you" is the right phrase for gifting something that made me sob loudly & will haunt me forever, right before going to bed... But thank you. Politicians who refuse to ban weapons of war should be forced to see the mutilated bodies in person. #BanAssaultWeapons
@echanda This is a theme I'm hearing and I agree completely.
@Holberg Thank you for sharing. Hard reading, cried but also anger, real anger at those that allow this to happen.
@Holberg @harphat Thank you for sharing this. Absolutely horrific. This needs to be on every news tv station after every shooting.

@Holberg when Moses went up to get the tablets of stone. God don't say.

"Look Mose old chap..in a few years time, a nation will be so wrapped up in the Christianity to come that they will develop a weapon that kills innocent people for fun. And they will empower it's populous to have such a weapon and use it without qualm"

"Why lord?"

"Dunno but we'll go for thou shalt not kill"

@Holberg Thanks for sharing the article. It's horrible but hopefully helps counter the desensitization that arises from mass killings becoming a daily occurrence. I had to stop reading when it talked about the little boy's love of batman, but that's why the article is so powerful. ๐Ÿ’”
@Holberg I donโ€™t know what to say. This powerful article demonstrates no one outside of the army actually needs anything like this gun. But we already knew that a long time ago. It also makes it abundantly clear how far down the rabbit hole the situation is by showing that 9MM impacts are โ€œpreferableโ€. I agree that those involved with making the laws should see the untrammelled results of the laws. In truth, the whole damned thing sickens me to my core. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

@Holberg @aliettejonkers

Yes, that's an excellent article. And boy, that finisher you screenshotted is tough.

@Holberg What a horrible fucking story. Thank you for the link.
@Holberg Heartbreaking. And then you get to the comments and see bullshit from the gun lobby...

@Holberg

I'm sobbing. This was powerful, even as I am well aware what this weapon can do.

I live about an hour from Sandy hook, so we were inundated for months, but no images. Then Jones began his bullshit.

Every single lawmaker should be shown photos of every victim, after every single shooting.

And fuck the talking heads that remind us about gun violence in "Chicago..." just fuck off.

@Holberg

Guns dont kill people.
Republicans in office kill people.

@Holberg

That was grim af but interesting too; I hadnโ€™t previously understood this about high velocity rounds.
Completely insane to want a society where walking around with these weapons is a normal thing to do.

Thanks for sharing.

@Holberg Thank you for sharing - breaks my heart, but I hope many people will see it
Thanks for posting but I wonโ€™t be reading. I had to turn off the tv earlier when a witness described the carnage at the Texas outlet mall. My heart breaks for the lives and loved ones lost to these gun crazy degenerates.
