kids these days will never get to experience the expectant excitement of this screen ever in their life. not the tense sound as it reads your disk or the clicky sounds of your harddrive as the game is installed, or the celebratory drive opening as you finish... soulless downloads is all we have left. pour one out for....
@mia FUCKYEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

I remember realising as a kid that as soon as the individual file bar stopped going fast the TOTAL PROGRESS bar started going because that meant a large cab was being decompressed
@aetios i miss the wizards, where did they all go?
@alexandria @aetios pretty sure they all transitioned and changed their @'s
@alexandria @aetios I still see installShield from to time
@alexandria @aetios On windows, most indie stuff still uses them (I prefer the "unzip and click on exe" approach, but still)
@aetios oh my god I totally forgot about the disk bay opening
@aetios this reminds me - people like to rag on things being clunky... but I like it that way! not everything needs to be hyperpolished and perfect! it just removes the humanity from it.
@nerm_nelly @aetios I want to hear the computer doing a think whilst it installs my rollercoaster Tycoon game
@[email protected] Holy shit I suddenly wanna boot up the old PC again
@aetios at least the solastalgia is for free now

@aetios true, true...

Can we at least have the #NeoFloppy?

@aetios I still see that sometimes when installing certain programs or drivers on Windows.

@aetios Somehow I don't remember seeing this.

I didn't exactly have the money for all that many games (limiting my exposure) and lucked into second/third hand consoles for what was probably the majority of that tool's popularity.

@aetios this post suddenly reminded me of the oddly-specific time that seven-year old me somehow managed to create a 30 mb partition in windows xp's diskmgmt.msc snap-in... and wound up trying to install a whole-ass copy of NASCAR Heat (or was it NASCAR Racing 2? can't remember) on it via CD with this kind of installer layout

suffice to say it backfired because i had no fucking idea how disk space worked

@aetios And then you find out that they gave you recycled disks, because it says that it's registered to someone else - which is one of those reasons for making disk images right away. πŸ˜…
@aetios it was pretty sad when innosetup ditched the classic wizard for an all emcompassing notWin2000 style look. On the NSIS side there's an addon called InstallSpider but I remember that being very unstable
@[email protected] Ive had modern programs do this screen...
@theking but the combination with cd drive sounds is important p
