From @xeegeek on bird:

“I asked @jaketapper to ask Hinton about his lack of support for @timnitGebru , @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith and other whistleblowers.

His response is that their concerns were less existential than his and that it’s easier to voice concerns if you leave first.”

@ubiquity75 @timnitGebru @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith
And he insists that Google is developing AI responsibly and doesn’t mention that they effectively have no ethics or safety oversight left. Nor does he mention the environmental and gig worker harm being done.
@ubiquity75 @timnitGebru @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith "More existential" indeed. What does that even mean? "The Emperor's clothes are astonishing In their refinement and quality, but the commoners don't understand that they are in terribly poor taste."
@ubiquity75 @timnitGebru @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith Wow. I don't even know where to start with that set of justifications.
@ubiquity75 @timnitGebru @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith Mildly surprised that he didn’t call their (real, current, concrete) issues as “silly girl stuff.”
@ubiquity75 @timnitGebru @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith He has that exactly backwards. They spoke up when it was harder, making it easier for him to speak up much later, after he'd made much more money.
@ubiquity75 @timnitGebru @mmitchell_ai @Mer__edith He's not voicing the concerns they're voicing. He's voicing hype "so powerful it's an existential threat." #AIHype
