The SS United States: Philadelphia's Abandoned Ocean Liner

Gaining access to photograph the SS United States in Philadelphia took years. It remains one of the most unique and significant abandoned sites I've visited. By Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America.

@AbandonedAmerica this is a great write up. I used to sit at the Ikea across from the pier and wonder about this huge ship, but that was nearly 20 years ago and I forgotten about it until now. Thanks for your work to bring it back to light!
@orangeaaron sure thing Aaron, and thanks for the kind words on the article!
@AbandonedAmerica I chuckled at your mention of gazing at the ship over a meal of IKEA’s meatballs, because my spouse and I did just that, the last time we were there, while speculating about what might become of it.
@N3VEM it's kind of hard not to when you're there, right?? 😄

@AbandonedAmerica

Terrific write up and photos! Kudos. Lucky for you—and for us—that you were able to tour. My heart breaks whenever I'm on Delaware Ave. or crossing the W.W. Bridge and I see the SS United States. It's a metaphor—a sad one.

Your line: "...without another stroke of luck, the worst-case scenario of the ship being destroyed might become a reality." Sad truth.

@RichStein thanks so much! God, I'd be heartbroken if it got scrapped. What a loss that would be.
@AbandonedAmerica Beautiful ship. That bow rake! Thank you for this, the article was great.
@jackscerebellum thanks so much Matt! It really is a gorgeous ship. I just don't get how gleeful people are about destroying it
@AbandonedAmerica It really is. I get the problem, and why it's probably gonna get scrapped, but they should just do it silently and not tell me about it and make me sad.
