@Scarlet why would ANYONE want #AppleLightning?

I can understand #MicroUSB even tho #USBc is the electromechanically superior connector but why Lightning?!?

@kkarhan @Scarlet ...because i have an iphone, an ipad, airpods and an old ipod touch

all of which use the (actually mechanical superior) lightning

@tay @kkarhan @Scarlet yep it’s definitely a good easy to use charger and I have some docks and cables that are nearly a decade old ; if you don’t treat them bad they treat you well too!

If the (next) phone gets usbc I won’t complain or if it keeps lightning for longer ; nbd.

@Stirlo @tay @Scarlet Well, I find this interesting because people have an escalating commitment to proprietary #SingleVendor / #SingleProvider standards.

And no, #Lightning is an inferior connector by number of cycles and mechanical stability as well as strain relief. Even cmpared to #MicroUSB and espechally #USBc. It's a Symbol of #Apple's Assholeism and refusal to comply with binding Standards from regulators like @EU_Commission ...

@Stirlo @tay @Scarlet @EU_Commission Espechally since it's not like the original #DockConnector a "necessary evil" due to lack of alternatives which - like proprietary laptop docking stations - simply fanned-out internal ports and several interfaces...

#MHL on #MicroUSB was long specified before #Apple switched to #Lightning and unlike #USBc, Lightning hasn't even a very high cycle rate of (dis-)connections.

@kkarhan @tay @Scarlet @EU_Commission I’m still using lightning cables and docks I got in 2014 ; personally have no issue with durability or whatever

And if I truly wanted to use the phone in a similar way to Samsung’s excellent Dex idea ; many systems are available already for this purpose. Airplay for AV over wifi ; non exclusive to apple as well. BT keyboards and other peripherals all connect easily; xbox/PlayStation or whatever brand controllers if you want that. Wires are inconvenient and can be a trip or pull-down hazard.

If apple gets rid of the port completely, i would be happy. PRC and Authoritarian regimes not so much. Cellbrite ( 😡 🤬) too

@kkarhan @tay @Scarlet @EU_Commission a lot of my more security minded friends block or seal the port off completely or disable the pins;
Depending where you live or work - visit it can be better to not have any way for easy physical access. MagSafe / Qi for charging and keep it off SMS and local cell and other networks with a good, non free or Self Setup VPN

Any physical port is convenient—and non secure. Liability. I’m not blocking mine but I wouldn’t ever use public charging points without the data “condom” or do a small operation to disable data over the lightning port.

@Stirlo @tay @Scarlet @EU_Commission well,OFC #JuiceJacking is an issue but don't think for a second that inductive chargers ain't communicating data at all.

It's just not as trivial...

What does help are data blockers that disconnect the data pins and do the power negotiation themselves, if not dedicaded "stupid DC Jack" adaptors or having ones' own charger or at least aforementioned data blocker.

@Stirlo @tay @Scarlet @EU_Commission Sadly there is no simple way to passively configure voltage and amperage on UBC(-C) with like termination resistors (similar to RS-485 networks and the use of "unit loads"...
