BillieMy experience is that #usb cables in 99% fail at their #microusb / #usbc ending.
So cutting them off and soldering some #dupont connectors instead gives them a 2nd life as a power supply for microcontrollers and other fun projects.

* Some such devices will not accept power over a power+data cable if plugged into a power source rather than power+data.
* For these devices you need both a power-only and a data+power cable for different functions;
* Nevertheless, the manufacturers only supply a data+power cable, and don't document the difference.
Corrections/improvements?
So have I got this right?
* #MicroUSB connectors are polarised so only go in first time if you use a magnifying glass;
* MicroUSB connectors can be used to power devices;
* MicroUSB cables can be either data+power or power-only;
* Some devices which require MicroUSB for power will therefore (obviously) not accept data from a power-only cable, but:

@stage7 AFAICT: No they don't act like a #Powerbank but merely as Lithium battery with integrated charge controller and can only be charged from that #MicroUSB port and only discharged from their battery contacts as per spec.
