CDC opens probe after 35 test positive for covid following CDC conference

Attendees say many people did not mask, socially distance or take other precautions recommended earlier in the pandemic.

The Washington Post
When experts say "this is, unfortunately, the new normal," it's important to add that the "new normal" means continuing high levels of death, chronic illness, and exclusion of high risk and immunocompromised people from society. The "new normal" is unacceptable.

@luckytran

"New normal" is how they absolve themselves of any responsibility.

@KanaMauna @luckytran I don't get the feeling that the experts had any agency in the decision-making process, so in that sense they're not responsible for anyone's behavior but their own. Like ... I know if I were in Varma's position, I'd just be gesturing at the outcome of the conference from behind an N-95.
@luckytran let’s see if they change their minds once they are part of the immune compromised demographic. Mo infection mo damage.

@andymoose @luckytran Spoiler alert: Nope

Humans (and to an extreme extent, all other animals) have a mostly unlimited ability to accept defeat, or loss, or most kinds of unimprovement

@luckytran that is such utter nonsense. If taking precautions were the new normal this would not have happened.

@Tarheel @luckytran

"Attendees said many people at the gathering did not mask, socially distance or take other precautions that the CDC had recommended earlier in the pandemic."

--> we tried nothing and it didn't work 👀

@kdnyhan @Tarheel @luckytran Seems like a fine time to clean house at the CDC.

@Tarheel @luckytran

Does the "rapid epidemiological assessment" include asking the participants and conference staff to test? Bc the quoted email says to test *if you are experiencing symptoms.*

Actually, if CDC is living in an alternate universe where all transmission is from symptomatic people, that would explain a lot 🤣

@kdnyhan @Tarheel @luckytran That was exactly my thought. We know that asymptomatic transmission is one of the biggest drivers of this bullshit. “I’m not sick. How can I make anyone else sick? “ no one in the group I was in looks sick. How could I have gotten sick? “ #Covid #CDC
@Pineywoozle @Tarheel @luckytran And the circumstances will never be better for a robust outbreak investigation of spread at a big conference than they are here.
CDC staff should have a high response rate.
People with insurance still have free access to rapid tests.
The event was big enough that they, as a big customer, can ask the venue for ventilation info and actually get something (instead of getting fobbed off with "don't worry, we are code-compliant")
@kdnyhan @Tarheel @luckytran Wonder if they’ll do it, and just try to keep it quiet
@Pineywoozle @kdnyhan @Tarheel @luckytran This is something that annoys the hell out of me - testing before a group activity is trivially easy and if you test when you wake up, then do your morning routine, the test is ready. It takes approximately 2 minutes out of your day. It’s not perfect, but would weed out superspreaders.
@JustinDerrick @kdnyhan @Tarheel @luckytran So many simple things we could be doing. Adequate air filtration in schools. Just a Corsi box in the corner of a fucking room. It breaks my brain how unseriously people are taking this.
@luckytran what’s unacceptable is it forces people like me to live in a perpetual “March 2020”, and HCW everywhere are psychologizing our continuing protection measures as anxiety and gaslighting us, I fucking hate it

@anniegreens @luckytran

Yes, this is just the worst 😡 There are lots of us now in our fourth year of isolation and no one wants to talk about it.

It is thoroughly depressing to hear a qualified, experienced counsellor suggest "what if you just ignored the virus?". It's like the "this is fine" cartoon come to life.

I'm guessing that it's a combination of lobbyists wanting to avoid short term financial hits, and support workers whose entire training was based on a stable relatively disease-free world where medical authorities would take action if there was a danger.

Support workers now have no training at all for a situation where public health has been abandoned by those in charge of promoting it. This is a horrible thing to admit, so they resort to some kind of denial.

@luckytran There are many "new normals" coming. Covid was just the beginning.
@luckytran @SuperTwaddle The comfortable are often o.k. with things that should be unacceptable if the wealthy who control the levers of power say they must be accepted….even “experts” seem to accept the unacceptable

@luckytran Don’t forget the automatic drop in standard of living for the entire society, resulting from inflation, resulting from a drop in labour participation, resulting from a drop in work output just generally — the new normal, everyone everywhere tired all the time

Economics is much easier if you don’t think about the money

@luckytran so the new normal is us just diseasing ourselves into extinction?
