Real vs hyped causes of deaths.
@Savvyhomestead
In the UK year on year crime has gone down, but the public perception of crime has gone up thanks to the 24h news cycle.

@Savvyhomestead
Threats with direct human agents are seen as much more salient than other threats.

The psychology makes sense in the (small) human social context in which we lived for most of the lifetime of our species; if you have a killer nearby, you want to know. It makes a lot less sense now.

@Savvyhomestead Je voudrais bien voir ce graphisme mis ร  jour avec le Covid...
@Savvyhomestead

These are 2016 statistics. During the pandemic, respiratory disease (i.e. Covid) moved up to the 3rd leading cause of death pretty much everywhere.
@Savvyhomestead This is from the USA? And it doesn't include "guns" as a cause of death? What's the explanation for why not?
@TimWardCam From what I can determine, In 2021 there were 12,520 homicides. Of those about 11,628 were non-accidental and non-law enforcement related homicides by firearms. In 2021 47,646 died from suicide - that was the last category at the bottom of the chart. Guns are not involved in all homicides.
Homicide, by definition, result from accidental, reckless, or negligent acts even if there is no intent to cause harm.
@TimWardCam @Savvyhomestead guns will be counted under things like suicide. That's the problem with charts like this: it might not have to breakdown you want.
@nitot ce RT matinal ๐Ÿ˜‚
@Savvyhomestead sharks and quicksand are clearly underrepresented in this chart
@lmorchard @Savvyhomestead I am also sorely disappointed that my early childhood training on Bermuda Triangle avoidance has gone unused
@Savvyhomestead - What I find amazing about heart disease is how much we don't know about various causes. (We know a bunch of common causes but there are still mysterious afflictions that millions of people contend with.)
