I like #Mastodon better than #bluesky conceptually. Federated & decentralized is vastly more appealing to me than another billionaire's plaything.

That said, ultimately the utility of a social network is entirely dependent on the user base. Mastodon has been a largely solitary, non-interactive experience for me- I have one IRL friend who posts with any regularity. If BS is what finally has people migrating away from the birdsite and zuckerverse, that's where you'll find me.

@Loopgru Twitter has 300+ Million users. You can't expect Mastodon or Bluesky beat it.
@RumbleArray Myspace, Friendster, Livejournal, Google+... All empires recede into the sand in time. I do think that Twitter is on its way to its place in the historical footnote club. Are either Mastodon or Bluesky going to be the next in line? No idea. Maybe I'm just showing my GenX age in thinking that it's not TikTok already.

@Loopgru If Mastodon wants to become a Twitter alternative it has to be user-friendly. Specifically when you create an account.

Bluesky has the “advantage” that is a closed source app, so they can do whatever they want, like forcing their main server as the default server for registration.

Mastodon set the default server to mastodon.social, but as a community driven project it had resistance against it.

The decentralized social media revolution is just beginning.

@RumbleArray I genuinely don't understand the "it's too complicated" complaint. You pick a server, pick a username, and you can interact with others regardless of their server. And if you don't like your server, you can move, freely and seamlessly. Anyone who's ever set up an email address (which they'd need to sign up anyway) should have no problem at all grasping this.

@Loopgru I've seen other complaints like “Mastodon is too white” and that Bluesky is somewhat more friendly to persons of color, which is strange as racists were brute-forcing the invite code. Chris Trottier found a racist on Bluesky.

Mastodon is not free from racists, but moderation seems to work better here.

From my perspective, these people wanted a Twitter replica and Bluesky is Twitter but decentralized. Mastodon is a Twitter alternative, not a replica they expected to be.
