The kid has drifted into watching NBA highlights on his iPad, so I decided to buy #NBA2K23 for the #nintendoswitch. Hoops aren't really my thing, but I want to keep recuperation interesting for him.

Even with the Switch’s limitations, it's nice to see this kind of high-level sports game on the platform. Due to stupid EA and stupid licensing, we'll never get an NFL or NHL game for Switch. https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/nba-2k23-switch/

I dig these modern sports games that have TV-style presentation, with play-by-play commentary and analysis. The first time I saw it was when #NFL2K was a launch title for the #Dreamcast. They just left it running in attract mode at Costco and a group of guys (myself included) were drawn to the TV section and just stared at it in amazement for minutes on end. It was an enormous leap over PS1 football.
Now, the bad news about #NBA2K23: apparently, there’s only the bare minimum of data on the game card; you have to download a 43 GB software update right off the bat to get the full game. Or if you buy digital, it’s 55 GB. Hope you put a big-ass MicroSD card in your Switch. It took us two hours over gigabit internet to download the whole thing.

Anyways, sports sims and even extreme sports are a real weak spot in the Switch lineup. Mario golf/tennis/baseball/soccer isn’t an adequate substitute for fans of the real sports.

Every time I see a Nintendo Direct where they’re talking up a half-dozen JRPG remasters, I’m like “that’s great for RPG fans like me, but you really ought to focus on the weak spots of your library instead of the low-hanging fruit.”

Other thing to praise about #NBA2K23: they have the #WNBA too. Since I went to a college with an always-good women’s team (national champions my senior year), I’ve followed the women’s game over the years, and I’ll have to try it out in-game.

Probably also worth noting in this thread that #MLBTheShow23 has an acclaimed history mode covering the Negro Leagues, and it’s on Switch too.

@invalidname I have been playing The Show this year and the Negro Leagues mode is great
