The day video platforms stop offering ad-free streaming options is the day I will stop paying altogether and revert to piracy.
@snazzyq yes! spread your seed. 👏👏
@snazzyq You can do the in-between thing and sign up for the ad plans to save some cash and block them with Pi-hole or NextDNS. I use NextDNS CLI on a Raspberry Pi (could also install on the UDM) to block on VLAN for my streaming boxes. Confirmed works to block the ads on Paramount+, HBO Max, Hulu (I think), Peacock, and Roku Channel.
@snazzyq I suspect they will still offer them, just at a higher price.
@snazzyq what really is infuriating to me is paying more for “ad free“ and then having an unskippable 40 to 90 second promo before each episode. Looking at you paramount plus.
@MuseumShuffle I have never seen a promo on Paramount Plus.
@nwd well, it’s not uncommon and I see it before every single Star Trek episode I watched.
@MuseumShuffle I wonder if it’s because I use DNS-based blocking on all my devices (NextDNS).
@MuseumShuffle Wait, no. I sometimes watch Paramount+ content with my parents when I’m at their house. Never had a promo video, and they don’t use DNS-based blocking.

@nwd it was literally every single episode of Picard for me. The finale had an unskippable 90 second promo. I could not cancel that service fast enough when the finale was over.

“I love that every time I fire up my paid, ad-free subscription to Paramount Plus, I am forced to watch an unskippable ad for Strange New Worlds, a show I have already watched every episode of -- AS THEY KNOW.”

@snazzyq Because I live out in the boonies, I’ve slowly started to go back to physical media or, where possible, paid downloads I can drm strip.
@Aminorjourney @snazzyq physical media, is that those disks that insult the paying customers with a warning against piracy?

@snazzyq Gabe Newell put it best.

It's about the service being better than what the pirates offer.

And we are speedrunning towards that not being the case anymore.

@snazzyq I literally developed a nervous tic from YouTube ads. When they would start I would shudder. I hate paying them $15 a month but the ads are worse.
@snazzyq I won’t give a thumbs-up on piracy, exactly, but if they go that route I can’t say I’ll feel sorry for them when people resort to it.
