Scientific illustrator Mark Balen of @artscistudios has a wonderful new infographic out: The Global Biomass of Mammalian Life

And Earth is full of cows. https://www.visualcapitalist.com/biomass-of-mammals/ #SharedPlanet

Visualizing the Biomass of All the World’s Mammals

When the world's biomass—the stuff we're made of—is tallied up, humans and cattle outweigh wild mammals by a massive margin.

@Sheril @artscistudios I think it would be interesting to see what would happen if we died out but they didn't... That could be something fun to explore in fiction.
@apodoxus @Sheril @artscistudios The book After Man is an early exploration of evolution imagined forward if humankind disappeared. There have been many others since then focusing also on what happens to human-built stuff - books, documentaries, etc.
@Sheril @artscistudios I’m surprised that goats are above dogs. And that horses are so close to dogs.

@Sheril @artscistudios I still haven't fully relearned baking, but being vegan is far less sacrifice these days

If animal subsidies weren't there, it would be unequivocally cheaper. Growing food to feed your food is inefficient

@Sheril @artscistudios

The Saudis have enough money to build desalination plants & grow their own alfalfa.

Yet, instead they went cheap & grow it in Arizona for export to Saudi Arabia.

Why?

Unless this has little to do with cattle & more to do with the real estate money laundering so common between OPEC & Republican billionaire donors?

I've been discussing how GOP billionaire donors are funding fascism for nearly a year, yet the identities of the donors remains a secret.

My Twitter account was suspended for criticizing Ellison's role in Jan 6, & yet, instead of vehement denials, GOP billionaire donors are funding disingenuous antisemetic counter-narratives about Soros.

Why?

If these folks genuinely believe they're "Patriots saving America" why are they concealing their identities?

It's hardly "loud & proud" behavior

@Npars01 For the same reason members of the KKK hide behind sheets: because hate needs to hide in the darkness.

@reverendref

The moral license that comes from group anonymity too. Mob violence is excused too often.

To flourish, hate needs secrecy, an information bubble, an echo chamber, and the admiration of your betters.

And a lack of input from opponents of your views.

It's why the gamergate tactics of mass attacks on prominent women is so successful. Same technique was used on #metoo, #BLM, and trans.

Republican billionaire donors are funding a supply of a fake form of admiration via...

... astroturf malign influence campaigns on social media.

Likes & reposts fool the gullible into believing their views are popular & acceptable.

Then they show up at a coup & realize they've been duped. Or come up from the subway and realize they're the only one who showed up to "own the libs" at a Trump protest.

Ego stroking is a well used espionage practice also.

@Sheril @artscistudios Wow, und zwar inhaltlich als auch das Design.
1338: Land Mammals - explain xkcd

Explain xkcd is a wiki dedicated to explaining the webcomic xkcd. Go figure.

This little side graphic showing the ratio of cattle to other mammalian life is just... wow. More than humans, 10x more than marine mammals (which includes whales!) and 20x more than all wild terrestrial mammals.

Thank you for including it!
@Sheril @artscistudios Without the humans, there would be no for all that cattle.
I just saw this week that fossil fuels account for 40% of global freight.
