Kinda seems like it never had much credibility, we were just lulled into believing it did.

I think liberal elites share a lot of blame for that by trying to defend the work of the Warren court as the result of a neutral application of the law rather than intentional choices to improve the country at large. They sold the public on scotus neutrality and for decades conservatives used that as cover to intentionally increase plutocratic power.

Between multiple ethical lapses by taking serious money from third parties with an interest in pending cases, violating disclosure laws, and even acting like a political body - overturning a 50 y.o. precedent and restricting rights simply because the right-wing got a voting majority, they are seriously undermining the nation's confidence in the institution.

Sadly, reform is impossible as long as we have no consensus that democracy or liberty is even good, and one party
tries to undermine both in their attempts to stay in power.
