@cmuratori: Many programmers seem to take Knuth's statement on premature optimisation and interpret it as meaning they shouldn't optimise at all.

And many computer scientists still take his advice to start the analysis of an algorithm by determining its asymptotic worst-case behavior as meaning that the analysis need not go any further.

(I know, I was one of them, for many years...)
