Looking up at one of the older buildings, noticed the reflections in the first floor windows look like they've been painted on with oils.

@psychopoesie What i love about this is that it's a lovely building and architecturally stunning, still.

Nobody will stand in front of the new build houses, in container-box-format, and say what beautiful pieces of work they are.

I hate architects at the moment. Im sure they are nice ppl, but their work sux.

@Godfrey642 i love old buildings too. More modern stuff can be beautiful but yeah many of the new builds lack that certain something.
@psychopoesie @Godfrey642 I took a photo of some of Melbourne’s more interesting high rise buildings the other day. While interesting, they lack the warmth & character of older buildings. They’re marvels of modern construction & engineering, but I don’t find myself wondering about the people who occupy & work in them. They are hard, sterile looking edifices.
@Susan60 @Godfrey642 yeah. Warmth and character certainly aren’t the first words that come to mind thinking of contemporary high rise.
@psychopoesie @Godfrey642 And all new buildings need to be highly sustainable, including plans for how they’ll be dealt with at end of life.

@Susan60 @psychopoesie i think modern buildings are functional and provide a space. But there is (arguably) rarely "beauty". I would also question their sustainability. Many are built with polystyrene blocks, with concrete and steel. Many have cracks and design faults.

Our daughter went to look at a (too good to be true) flat that turned out to have flammable cladding and balconies on the 1st and 2nd floors above her patio/garden that needed "urgent attention". The solicitor advised strongly against buying. Bit what's to stop a landlord snapping it up and letting to an unsuspecting and desperate tenant?

Cars get RWCs before you can legally sell them. Properties don't.

@Godfrey642 @psychopoesie Yes, I think our building codes need an overhaul. Polystyrene should be banned. Timber is being used more overseas & more sustainable forms of insulation.
@psychopoesie very nice - Bolton Street?
@Digital_Archivist close. On the corner of Market St (the end that's opposite Thorn St and closer to the Newcastle Permanent) and the mall.
