it’s simple, really

there is no “trans debate”

human rights are NEVER up for debate

there’s nothing to discuss

you either believe all human beings deserve to be equal, or you’re a bigot

and we don’t debate with bigots

@tillybridges One of the great advantages of having your constitution written in the wake of fascist genocide is this: Article 1 of the German Basic Law: https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_gg/englisch_gg.html#p0019
Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany

@tillybridges not that this is perfectly applied, but still, having it in the constitution is a pretty good starting point.
@tealeg so how bad is transphobia in Germany? do you not have legislators trying to make laws that try to eliminate us?

@tillybridges It's a mixed bag - on the one hand, we have a 3rd gender "divers" (Diverse) in law, on the other hand, you can see things like this: https://www.dw.com/en/trans-germany/a-56031861

... and yes, of course, we have right-wing, anti-trans types as well. I would say that view is not *as* prominent as in the USA for example. I can't personally speak from experience as to how it feels to live here as a trans person, as I am not one.

Germany's Transgender Law seen as 'archaic, degrading'

Trans* people in Germany are subjected to a long, expensive assessment process to change their legal gender. Efforts to introduce a new self-determination law have been delayed — but activists say it is badly needed.

@tealeg yeah see we ostensibly have laws here that should protect us, our liberty is being intentionally removed. but the bigots don’t care about that and the opposing party by and large refuses to stand up for us on a federal level
Germany unveils plans for simpler gender change process

Transgender people in Germany will have an easier time formally changing their gender and name under a new government plan. Self-determination would replace the requirement for two expert reports and court approval.
