Reminder: Raising the debt ceiling does not increase spending or the federal debt. It simply allows the government to pay bills it has already taken on— and defaulting on the debt would be catastrophic.

@rbreich It's really so easy to point out how lives would be lost in such a catastrophe. Medicine, law enforcement, food supplies...

I honestly don't understand how the trolls sleep at night while they play chicken with their constituents' lives

Republicans have played this game before but they seem to never learn. It does not work out well for them in the end...
@[email protected] the gop thinks listening to fiscal advice from the ppl who brought us the last 2 economic crashes & keep breaking their own highest deficit ever record is beyond outrageous.
@rbreich Are you sure that what you said makes sense? Cause you just said “Havin debt isn’t actually debt cause of reasons”
@rbreich Heard a report recently that estimated a $1-billion cost to taxpayers for the downgrade of US bonds from AAA to AA+ after the 2011 squabble over debt ceiling. Thanks, Ted Cruz.
@rbreich Serious question: If “raising the debt ceiling” doesn’t increase the level of our debt, how was it named so poorly and what should we call it instead?
@rbreich Much like a completely solvent person just refusing to pay their bills because they've so decided.
@wndlb @rbreich
Republicans like to say it’s like you’ve reached your credit card limit and just can’t buy any more. It isn’t like that at all. It’s like you bought stuff with your credit card and now you don’t want to pay the credit card bill. Very different thing.
