I have a very dear friend wanting to join Mastodon from elsewhere, but he's hoping for a server that's going to help him stay dialed into his work in #trans   activism. I said I'd put it out there and see if anyone had any recommendations. What say you, Fediverse?

UPDATE: Thank you all so much for your boosts and your advice. Not only was I able to present him with some great suggestions, I got to show him how amazing and welcoming you people are. Y'all are the absolute best.

@rdp I know a few trans people on tech.lgbt - sadly another trans-run server shut down after a hate campaign caused it to get defederated. :-(

There's also chaosfem.tw but that's more targeted as trans feminine people; although it is accepting of all.

@ehurtley Thanks, Ed. Malicious defederation attacks are the worst.
@ehurtley @rdp https://tech.lgbt looks online and accepting new accounts. Does the second part of that sentence refer to a different server?
LGBTQIA+ and Tech

We welcome all marginalized identities. This Mastodon instance is generally for folks who are LGBTQIA+ and Allies with an interest in tech work, academics, or technology in general.

Mastodon hosted on tech.lgbt
@adamhotep @rdp It does, yes. One I didn’t bother mentioning due to it. (The one in question is still technically online, to give users time to migrate away, it will deactivate in two weeks, hence my not naming it.)
@ehurtley Apologies, that sentence confused me. "Sadly, a different trans-run server is shutting down …" would remove the ambiguity
@rdp Lots of good activism going on here at kolektiva.social. But whichever server he ends up on, I'm looking forward to meeting him!
@rdp If your friend is in the tech space, I follow a few people on https://tech.lgbt which might be a fit.

@rdp can try tech.lgbt and maybe kolektiva.social

@heyjovo - would you have any to recommend?

@poppacalypse @rdp sorry for the delayed reply, I don’t have any to add beyond what’s already in the thread, but one way your friend might evaluate potential servers is to look at their instance’s code of conduct and blocklist—if they share them anywhere. You can learn a lot by what people prioritize in terms of moderation, and it would be a good sign if they explicitly block known transphobic servers.
@heyjovo @poppacalypse This is great advice and I appreciate it, John. Thank you.
@rdp have you tried tossing a rock?
@rdp The best person I know who knows about all this is @AvengingFemme :)
@rdp
I'm on socel.net and while it's not specifical a trans-focused server, I receive a ton of pro trans material in my local feed.
@rdp I don’t wish to speak for anyone but I cannot myself imagine administration of certain very large instances having any objection to anyone not spewing hatred.
@rdp A bit late to this, but kolektiva.social is my first thought, tech.lgbt second.
@rdp
Towns.gay all the way
@rdp Do you know about https://instances.social/ ? This could probably help to select a good server.
Mastodon instances

@rdp last I looked at joinmastodon.org there were a whole bunch of LGBT and trans themed instances
@ssfckdt Oh for real. Mastodon is gay AF. ❤️ My buddy is looking for something extremely specific, so I was checking to see if there was anything out there geared toward that.
