Starting May 15, Imgur is instituting a ban on any images containing nudity, pornographic, or otherwise "mature" content. They'll also purge any images not uploaded by a registered account.

So all those images of guides, how-tos, and examples? Those will disappear. I suspect this is going to have an effect on websites like GitHub and GitLab where folks have used Imgur to host the images in their projects' README files.

Even worse, there will be a massive loss of images of protests, government corruption, and citizen journalism. Many of those photos were uploaded anonymously to protect the creator.

@CyberpunkLibrarian Looks like Imgur is fucked.
@CyberpunkLibrarian Didn't they already do this? I could have sworn they banned that kind of thing for being advertiser unfriendly. This is such a moronic, shortsighted thing to do.
@CyberpunkLibrarian really feels like Silicon Valley wants to close down the Internet into various walled gardens that the majority of people won't have full access to.
But they'll take everything we've ever posted on the Internet and then sell it back to us, and we let them? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
@CyberpunkLibrarian Agreed. However, I would also like to point out that anonymous uploading has been used by bad actors including Junk mail organizations.
Sucks all those great memes, infographics, and other useful information will be lost.
Maybe a bunch of registered users should collaborate to preserve all the educational material. (I'm not kidding).
@CyberpunkLibrarian the writing was on the wall the moment they added 'social' features a few years back
@CyberpunkLibrarian this is a reprehensible amount of culture to burn, fucking hell.
@CyberpunkLibrarian Do any of the internet archives keep a copy of imgur pics?
oh hey look @cstross wasn't this part of the plot of Glasshouse? :|
@troodon Oh, DRM in general was part of that! And proprietary file formats, and region encoding, and protocol churn on a period of years or decades. (Got any Word docs from 1995-2000 you want to open? Good luck with that!)
@CyberpunkLibrarian they can use archive.org to recover the images at least...
@CyberpunkLibrarian my third-party Reddit app's default image upload method is anonymous Imgur. I have an account and have had for a very long time, but there's currently no way to log into that account in that Reddit app. A lot of my more recent Reddit posts are going to disappear (the oldest ones I used my account for).
@CyberpunkLibrarian @thememesniper so all the porn previously hosted there is just gonna disappear?
@CyberpunkLibrarian Good, maybe people will finally learn their lesson about depending on a free hosting service

Doubt it though
