"If all citizens are equal before law, a bus with 80 passengers has the right to 80 times more street space than a car with one."
Which is why when you see buses whipping past cars stuck in trafficโ€”that's real democracy in action.

The corollary: when you see expensive cars parked on sidewalks with impunity, you know you're dealing with a dysfunctional "democracy."
@straphanger ...and when you see a combination of expensive cars and taxpayer-funded cop cars parked all over the sidewalk? #NYC
@straphanger
Why are the buses driving in the opposite lanes in the central roadway?
@MisterMadge @straphanger looks like the busway is completely separated, and that way they can have one central stop that people use for either direction.
@straphanger And what a difference giving each bicyclist the same space as a motorist would have as well, instead of pushing them off the road then claiming they're still "in the way".

@ned @straphanger To offer a good public transportation system in combination with a good public bicycle infrastructure is the best way forward for a sustainable transportation system in a city.

When living in Stockholm I was a ln e-biker most days of the year to the office (13 km one way). It was faster than public transportation. And with the benefit of getting 2 kids to and from preschool on the way.

Biggest advantage with a bike - you never get stuck in traffic.

@straphanger That's one way to encourage use of public transport - let commuting by car become a real pain while making pt easier, faster and more comfortable.
@anne_twain @straphanger I think that the research shows that cars actually do need to be less convenient for people to take transit more. There is a moral argument for that as mentioned in the first post.
