It is time for the #BBC and #NPR to set up shop on #Mastodon. Same applies to all other serious news institutions.

They should set up their own servers. They have the means to do so and it just makes sense.

#Twitter

@jon Yes. They both promote/advertise Twitter on every article. Do they not understand the damage they are causing?
Add Deutsche Welle dw.com to your list.

The BBC News Technology Editor Zoe Kleinman @zsk is on Mastodon now. Let's hope she can enlighten her colleagues and bring some change.

It's clear that the "go to the where people are" policy has become "send the people to Twitter and recommend it"

@ianp5a @jon @zsk But she hasn't tooted in many months.

I wonder if there's a policy change stopping her, or perhaps just too busy?

@jmbw @ianp5a @jon hello. Yes I am busy. But also, and this is inevitable, my twitter account is a lot larger and has a lot more activity on it. Growing a new platform is hard, it takes user time and patience - and that’s why so many of them fail.

@zsk @jmbw @jon
The centralised ones fail if they don't get critical mass, yes.
Decentralised networks benefit from all the other, connected networks.The Fediverse is still growing as Twitter is shrinking.

They have two totally different properties, and futures.

@zsk @jmbw @ianp5a , I think setting up a BBC server changes things. You can drive traffic your way instead of being dependent on the whims of the platform owner. I would have thought the latest comments and actions of Mr. Musk would have made that clear.

Setting up a server like that should not be hard for the BBC team. I know you have the competence to do this. If you want to hear about our experience, we are happy to help.
