Media Matters’ news director John Whitehouse spoke to cable subscriber fees after the Dominion/Fox News settlement.

“Fox News made roughly $1.9 billion from cable subscriber fees alone in 2022. And most of that is from people who never even watch the channel.”

“It’s absolutely ridiculous that cable companies make virtually all Americans subsidize this shit channel,” Whitehouse added.

“If you’re wondering who is paying the settlement, it's you, if you have a cable subscription with Fox.”

@DemocracyMattersALot things like this are why I haven’t paid for TV in over a quarter century.
@OGjester @DemocracyMattersALot We canceled cable as a cost saving measure when my wife became pregnant with our first child. That kid is 22 this year.
@DemocracyMattersALot we need to be able to opt out. There needs to be a way to exclude Fox News from cable packages.
@darwinwoodka @DemocracyMattersALot there is. In Canada the crtc said that Fox News could not be included in the basic cable package and had to be in a tier that people had to pay for. Fox left Canada. #defundfoxnews
@kimhoar @darwinwoodka @DemocracyMattersALot I don’t have cable bc I live in California but if i did, I would actually be willing to pay more to not have fox or any of my money to go to them
@kimhoar @darwinwoodka @DemocracyMattersALot This is why I have never paid for cable. It used to be hard to get access to media without paying the Fox tax, but not anymore. So happy for a la carte streaming options today. #defundfoxnews
@darwinwoodka @DemocracyMattersALot just quit them if they won’t drop Fox. Nothing else is more important. Cable companies won’t keep them if the consumers refuse to pay for services that include them.
@DemocracyMattersALot it's so nice cutting the cord.

Your daily reminder that analog (well, digital  ) TV antennas still work in most places, for free...

How long this remains true given today's "smart" TV companies make more selling your data than they do selling TV's is to be determined...

Tracking the Mudroach "win" I oddly checked a BBC page oddly very very recently deleted & now back ODD THAT?

Here is the original undeleted page!

Analysis: Murdoch and media ownership in UK

What are the issues and controversies around media ownership in the UK, following Vince Cable's comments on Rupert Murdoch?

BBC News
@DemocracyMattersALot no cable subscription here. Fine, mostly, but it pains me that we can't get many basketball games as we are now entering the playoff season
@DemocracyMattersALot I have Wi-Fi. Stream YT, and streaming channels. No Fox. FCC needs to do its job. Pull their license. They did try to overthrow our government. With orange Benedict Arnold. And cast of low IQ idiots! 🆘🇺🇸

@humansriseup @DemocracyMattersALot
Google should not allow Fox onto their servers too.

Companies that allow avowed liars to spread their lies are complicit.

@DemocracyMattersALot Stop paying for cable television. Read a book instead. Go for a walk instead. Problem solved.
@DemocracyMattersALot does this include YouTube.tv? I'm ready to boycott if YouTube is paying Fox.
There are even more 2020 election defamation suits beyond the Fox-Dominion case — NPR

In addition to the Dominion case against Fox News, more than a dozen similar cases related to lies spread about the 2020 election are slowly making their way through the legal system.

@DemocracyMattersALot Why I have not subscribed to cable since 1990-something and never will. Fuck these fascist assholes.

@DemocracyMattersALot

Also, Fox should he tagged as “publicly-funded” on birdshit, like the BBC, PBS, CBC and other outlets being targeted by Elon and his fascist friends who only want you receiving the corporate message.

You can talk all the shit you want about Fox News, but if you are paying any cable company for their services, you are paying Fox News.

@DemocracyMattersALot @TexasObserver

@DemocracyMattersALot That's why I went to streaming. I only pay for what I want.
@DemocracyMattersALot The only way to get cable companies to drop Fox is for subscribers to make a big statement--all together. Pick a day--July 4. Everyone call their cable companies and cancel their subscriptions. Tell the rep why. If thousands do it on one day, with the same reason. the companies will take notice. It has to be big. Otherwise they won't notice or care. I only stream, so I don't care. But if it matters to you, then organize.
@DemocracyMattersALot makes me wanna get cable so I can drop it and tell them its because of FOX 😏
@DemocracyMattersALot My cable is an automatic package arranged by my apartment complex. I have zero say.
@DemocracyMattersALot How many renters, paying record rent, are going to be drug into footing this bill?
@DemocracyMattersALot @geob42 I get it and I agree, but what can I do? The only reason I subscribe to the provider I have that also carries Faux News and even horrible Newsmax is because they carry the channels that have the live sports I want. I can tell them I don’t want FN and NM, but beyond that, I don’t have an alternative.

@jmuscara @geob42

Many folks have cut the cable and gone exclusively to streaming, where you can get most everything—including live news—and often for less than cable.

@DemocracyMattersALot @geob42 I am streaming. But if you want live sports, your choices are limited.
@jmuscara @DemocracyMattersALot that’s limited my move off of cable but I’m reexamining options now using the site suppose.tv
@DemocracyMattersALot I cut cable two Septembers ago for this very reason. Prior to that day, I had complained to my TV provider about Fox News and they were happy to give me $10 credits. But that wasn’t enough, in principle. It just meant 99.999% of all their other customers would keep funding fascism.
@DemocracyMattersALot
There's a really easy solution for this, people.
Just drop your cable subscription. It's easy. You just call them up and say you want to cancel your service. You save money, Fox loses their cut, and you get all of that time you were wasting watching TV back.
@DemocracyMattersALot yet another reason cable/satellite companies are working on a very outdated model and need to change or go away.
