Just read that it’s law that you have to turn your headlights on when it’s raining in Sweden.

How the hell am I supposed to know when it’s raining in Sweden?

@dgar Yes, I know it's a joke, but in case anyone (who?) is interested. In Sweden, you always need to have your headlights on, regardless of whether it's raining or not.
@loke @dgar not true, EU regulates that if your car has sensors and RDL they can be turned off during the day (the old law hasn't been removed because it applies to older cars). You'll notice that if you look at cars in the traffic.

@fredriksvaren @dgar I don't live in Sweden anymore, so I can't look at the traffic, but I found this text on Transportstyrelsen:

I dagsljus ska du använda halvljus, men du får även använda annat ljus. Halvljus och annat ljus får inte användas samtidigt. Med annat ljus menas ljus från varsellykta, dimljusstrålkastare eller spänningsreducerad halvljusstrålkastare.

The special rules you refer to only appears to apply to rear lights.

Fordonsbelysning - Transportstyrelsen

@loke @dgar I know, but EU law replaces it, so it really doesn't matter. It is not something anyone discuss today because it has affected all cars since 2011.
It is briefly discussed here:

Bilfrågan: Har vi lag på halvljus?

”Är det lag på halvljus eller har den slopats i och med nya bilars LED-ljusramper?”

@fredriksvaren @dgar but the article you referenced will only talks about rear lights. Headlights has to be on during the day in Sweden (halvljus or varselljus).
@loke @dgar yes, because that is the problem that got worse.
You don't have to believe me, just google any picture from Sweden in daylight. Here is one, feel free to count the amount of cars with low beam headlights ("half light"). They are not parked 🙂

@loke @dgar but you are right, there is a requirement of something resembling "varselljus", called daytime running lights/DRL, but they are nothing like the lights regulated in "halvljuslagen", they are more like position lights and it is the same throughout most of the EU, simply because you don't make different models for different countries anymore.
@dgar I will never not love the classics!
@dgar I'm afraid that's not a good enough excuse. You will have to use a constantly running weather app on your device, draining battery even when you don't care about it, just to be sure that you abide by the given rules. Failure to do so will cause your car to immediately stop working, even if you are driving down the road. A firmware update has just been pushed to make this happen. You have been warned...
@dgar I'd suggest asking Johnny Cash. He was in close contact with his Swedish friend, but they went through a lot of Hurt. So maybe it's better to ask Bono about the Swedish Thing. He's pretty friendly. I hear he really likes You, Too.

@dgar there is no switch to turn the headlights off on my motorcycle, so I am good if I ever go to Sweden on my bike

(Not sure you need to know this)

@dgar let's say it's raining in Sweden but I left my car at home...

@dgar

Good joke!

No joke:

"According to the Department of Motor Vehicles' California Driver Handbook, 'You must turn on your headlights if snow, rain, fog, dust, or low visibility (1,000 feet or less) requires the use of windshield wipers.' This law, as stated in California Vehicle Code 24400, took effect in January 2008."

@dgar

Also, for >20 years, I always drive with my headlights on.

"Research indicates that drivers who always drive with their headlights on reduce their risk for accidents by as much as ten percent. Pedestrians and other drivers simply find it easier to see cars that run their headlights, even on clear, sunny days."

@johnlogic @dgar

Almost sounds like car manufacturers should be required to have cars always have headlights come on when the vehicle is moving.

@IzabelaKaramia @dgar

I prefer having a switch so I can turn off my headlights if I want to run the engine without blinding others while I'm parked for a while in a lot in front of a store. Otherwise, I just leave the switch on.

I've seen a lot of bad decisions from companies trying to be nannies. One that comes to mind was the time (years ago) when GM set its new cars to automatically drive with their high beams on during the day, probably thinking that if a little is good, more must be better. Only (at least in California) it's unlawful to drive within a certain distance of another car while using high beams. What a brain fart.

@dgar Hehehe.

"I saw a sign that said '24 hour banking', but I didn't have that much time."

@dgar Lol I fall for those every time :-)
@dgar I see many have been here before me, but…
Easy - the Volvos have their headlights on

@dgar You also have to turn your headlights on when it’s raining in Georgia.

I think there is a song about that.

@dgar

i thought you have to have lights always on in sweden, at all the times while driving ... but have not been there in 40 years ...

@dgar just another revenue raising trap!
@dgar Dad joke central. Keep'em comin'. Blessed relief from politics, infosec, AI, and Shitter,
