Boggles the mind that in 2023 Canada doesn't have frequent high-speed electric rail from #Quebec City to #Windsor. 50% of Canada's population is in the red zone below.

People fly and drive instead. Such low-hanging fruit, but no government grasps it.

High-speed rail in the US Midwest, which has a similar population density as #Spain, would replace short-haul flights, and go a long way to reducing carbon emissions.

Should be a no-brainer for Amtrak Joe Bidenβ€”you'd think, anyway... (Fantasy map below)

In Europe, I go everywhere on high-speed electric trains.

In Canada and the US, I'm stuck on slow, late-running diesel trains.

I explore this sad situationβ€”and offer hope for the futureβ€”in my latest Straphanger dispatch

Rail Fail

North America's passenger trains, once world-beaters, have become global laughing stocks.

Straphanger, from Taras Grescoe
This nice visualization of Canada's population from @terence
@straphanger @terence Fun graphic but a few strange things. Why the curved lined into Montreal and Quebec? Chose to label Thunder Bay but not Sydney nor Grande Prairie.

There were a few surprises where I thought, "What is that place?!". Turns out I should really dust my laptop screen.
@straphanger It's the tracks. They don't belong in private (greedy) hands. Amtrak recently withdrew from a deal to rent trackage rights for another service in/out New Orleans because the rundown tracks in the hands of the Southern freight barons aren't certifiable for passenger rail.
