A Nigerian living in the UK has "discovered" a new lake and named it Iyi Ojemba.

Mazi Uba Acho, a native of Igbo Naton in W Africa, highlighted the absurdity of the colonialist mindset that sought to claim discovery of places already known to locals. He cited Mungo Park's claim to the River Niger in Nigeria and David Livingstone's claim to the Zambezi River, Zambia, and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

@els76uk good point well made.

But do you have a flag? πŸ˜‰

Bravo to this!

@els76uk Were doing Columbus in history right now and one of the kids asked "how could he discover America when there were already people living there?"
@Giliell: The people who had been living there suddenly developed a strange tendency to die of smallpox in large numbers. @els76uk
@els76uk "As a resident of New Lagos, Texas......."πŸ˜‚
@els76uk well why not? We have far too many Suttons & Newports!
@els76uk many decades ago there was a tv documentary about a group of Africans looking for 'darkest Britain'. It was just one program and subtle and brilliant. They eventually climbed some windswept hill in the middle of the country & planted a flag I think.
I'd love to see it again. Anyone recognise it from my description?
@els76uk Some sources, like this from 1955, do mention that eg Livingstone was ”the first white man” to see the Victoria Falls, etc. Which is then conveniently shortened to ”discovery”.
@els76uk our David Livingston and Cecil Rhodes πŸ˜ƒ

@els76uk I remember a TV program many years ago, possibly from the BBC, where a number of people of African origin traveled on a barge through England, naming things as they went.
