Sigh. I'm so tired of abortion access being purely in terms of "what about rape victims". A person shouldn't need to be raped to have the ability to make choices about their own body

Similarly a person shouldn't have to be in a "or they will die" position before they get to make choices about their body

Someone shouldn't lose the right to make choices about their body once they become "old enough to have a baby"

Fuck anyone who thinks they get to make choices about anyone else's body for them

@ohunt Republicans are well beyond that. We're well into "10 year old rape victim has to go to Indiana for an abortion" territory

I'm not kidding. https://time.com/6198062/rape-victim-10-abortion-indiana-ohio/

How a 10-Year-Old Rape Victim Who Traveled for an Abortion Became Part of a Political Firestorm

The case of a 10-year-old girl who had to travel from her home in Ohio to Indiana to receive an abortion after being raped has become a national news after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

@ohunt This debate needs to be framed like you were saying. Is a woman an American citizen? Yes or No. As an American citizen does a woman have the freedom to control her body? Can she refuse procedures that she doesn't want? Can she get procedures that she does want? Is a woman subservient to her fetus? Is the fetus more important than the woman?

Finally you should be able to shove your religious beliefs down our throats. If you don't believe in abortion then don't get one. #abortionrights

@Ecthompsonmd @ohunt The reactionary framing of this is as old as organized society, but in America specifically, partus sequitur ventrem, which is only as old as the English colony named after a supposedly Virgin Queen.
@ohunt I disagree. These issues need to be framed from the most disadvantaged and most vulnerable. If a society can't bring itself to help those people then there is something wrong with its fabric.

@retsil why? is a person only granted bodily autonomy if they're a victim? More to the point would the overt attacks on people's right to bodily autonomy become ok if we said abortion is ok for rape victims? If you aren't a rape victim you don't get bodily autonomy?

Making a point of purely the most vulnerable creates a range for "negotiation": It lets these controlling shitstains claim "we compromised" when they allow a child rape victim to abort, but no one else has bodily autonomy.

@retsil If a society can't bring itself to give people the right to bodily autonomy, the society is fucked. If *only* a specific subset of "special" cases get that autonomy then functionally no one has it. Take Florida: abortion is now only available to rape victims if they can prove they were raped, and even then only early in the pregnancy - so you're "allowing" rape victims to get an abortion if you manage to get a guilty verdict in less than a month from the rape.
@ohunt good points, but it wasn't really my point and I am appalled with the situation in #florida. I am sorry to have upset you as it appears that my line of argument is used in a very perverse way by the #gop. In #australia people who are disadvantaged (very young and poor) do not have equal access to abortion. They may have the right to some bodily autonomy ( < 22wks) but their right is entirely theoretical since they can't get access to services. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.abc.net.au/article/102018234
Women share difficulties and stigma around accessing abortion care with Senate inquiry

Feeling shamed and judged, travelling hundreds of kilometres and ending up significantly out of pocket — in their own words, these are some of the issues identified by women with access to abortion services in Australia.
